Spaceway Service Update -#3

We are currently experiencing an interruption of Internet service for our Spaceway customers. Our network engineers are working to restore service as quickly as possible. We don't anticipate service to be restored until sometime in the early afternoon on Wednesday the 5th. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you. Additional updates will follow.

If they discontinue the spaceway satelite and we have to move to Gen4 I will switch to a verizon cell data plan and hook our computers to the cell service. i think it will be cheaper and faster than HN and we already have 10 gigs in our current dataplan with verizon. Very unhappy with HN today.

Makes me think nobody here ever had their car breakdown. Stuff happens, nothing made by man is perfect.
Amen to that. BTW, no Internet Service Provider guarantees 100% up time. Most say they shoot for 99%. Sounds pretty good but 99% still means their service may be out up to 3.65 days each year.

I'm not griping so much about the down service as I am about NEVER having received credit when my service has been down before. I can live without the internet but I expect some sort of compensation when I have no service.

I been thinking about switching to cell service for a while, but with out having an unlimited download period it turns me away! I need the extra free usage to do updates and other large downloads. 10GB for the entire month is just not enough. If we have to switch to Gen 4 I hope they give a better offer then 50 GB nightly - give unlimited or at least 100 GB I might even be satisifed with 75.

Linda, your service being down for a few days due to alignment or something at your end is very different from a total service outage affecting tens of thousands...

@Jezra, drop it dude.  You know that isn't what caused this.

I live in rural New York State.  I do not get cell phone access at my house.  I, too, went through 4 hours of re-booting, checking all the connections, resetting my router, etc.  If I can get robocalls from political campaigns, why can't I get a robocall from HughesNet telling me that the NOC (or whatever) is down, and when I might expect it to be up again?  That way I know I have to be on the door of my local library when it opens.

This is a very inconvenient time for an outage with the Windows 10 upgrade knocking at the door.

Of course, no time is convenient for an outage...

Because unlike political phone calls, Hughes can't really call anyone on the do-not-call registry, and people never seem to keep their phone numbers upto date.  The next kicker is this, yesterday in Western Kentucky, someone cut into a fiber optic line bringing down phone service, and land-line internet for several states.  So sending a robo-call out with a ton of users focused in those areas wouldn't have done much good.

yeah... 12 hours ago. When we have an outage t at the company I work for, we send updates every 30 minutes.

The fact they posted, especially late last night, isn't normal.  She would normally have been home by then, and I am 100% positive that the reason they are so quiet today is because of what's going on, trying to figure things out, and having to deal with the call-centers...  The team that leads this website, is responsible for far more than pushing a few updates here.

Hughes almost never posts anything about outages, even planned service outages for maintenance.  The fact they are posting means it's serious and affects a large percentage of the network.

OK, then.  Let's have an opt-in phone system where we can give HughesNet permission to send us a robo-call.  I am part of the "ThunderCall" system where severe weather alerts send me an SMS (if I had cell phone service) or a phone call.  This would keep the panicked service calls to HughesNet down tremendously.

Does anyone really know what is out?  Did weather knock out the NOC?  Space dust blast the satellite?  Hacking?  Cut electrical line?  Most of us would be more patient if we really knew what was happening...

I do not understand the bit about the Windows 10 upgrade making this a bqd time for an outage. Win10 will still be there next week, will it not?

Charles, actually it wasn't on my end. When I called, it was always something on their end and even then they'd didn't feel it warranted compensation. They always suggest an upgrade which I can't afford. I live in the sticks with no other options for internet. Such is life....

So, Charles R or Patrick...

Is this why my HN9000 is sitting there with the system light slowly blinking at me and no transmit or receive lights since yesterday late afternoon?

jcollison, the Windows 10 upgrade is 3G big.  That's a lot of data to be downloading without interruption.  Yes, it the upgrade will be around for a year, but with 5 computers in our household needing to upgrade, we wanted to get going on them.  Among the 5 computers, we have 3 versions of Windows 7 and one of Windows 8.1 - each needing a specific download.  We're just impatient, of course.
