Extremely slow speeds at night

I was asked by Chris (Company Rep) to open a post with details after I replied to another thread with the same problem. I have been experiencing extremely slow speeds at night since around the first of November which was also my 1 year anniversary with HughesNet. I do not believe it is a hardware problem because I get fast to acceptable speeds at other times. You will see from my data below that the speed drops to an extremely low level at times. I captured this data using Speedtest. I don't have much data for the month of November because I assumed that it was related to additional activity during the election cycle. Here are my results:

Hello richknow,

Thanks for posting. You said you captured those tests using www.speedtest.net? We can use those results, however the one of the only speed test sites correctly configured for a satellite connection is at www.testmy.net. This is also what we'll need when escalating to our engineers to make changes to your site directly. What they ask is for are download tests using a manual size of 12 MB and 2 MB for upload. Preferably like you've already done, throughout each day and not just during a specific time.

So if you don't mind heading there and running some more for us that would be great. Then we can continue from there.

Thanks,
Chris

Chris, I will be glad to get some data using that site to check the speed. I am sure that after a couple of days worth of data we can see if Speedtest results are representative.

richknox,

Make sure that when you are running the tests at www.testmy.net you use a single device connected directly to the modem with a LAN cable.  NO ROUTER.  The router needs to be eliminated during the tests to get a baseline performance as the router can affect speeds.

It's also a good idea to create an account at www.testmy.net and run the tests while signed into that account.  After the tests, you can post your results page URL, which will have all of your test results in a single location that is easily accessible.

Chris,
Here are three tests from tonight. As you can see the data is very much like I got from Speedtest.

Hi richknox,

Do you have a laptop or desktop computer to test with? A Mobile device is not an efficient way to test the true speeds you are receiving.

Chris,
Since I was chastised by two of the posters on here to use a direct connection instead of a router I did tonight and there was very little difference between that reading (2nd set of numbers) and the reading from my iPad through WiFi (1st set of values). This shows me that it is not a hardware issue especially since there are times, early morning and late night, when my speed gets to where it should be. I am not a computer expert but I do have 37 years experience working in banking operations dealing with connectivity issues daily. So saying that I do understand when a hardware issue is involved and how to diagnose problems. These results confirm in my mind that it is a problem with the Hughes system of some type and not after the signal gets into my house. Here are the results from tonight:

Richknox,
One reason that it is requested that the router be removed during baseline testing is due to the routers QoS function.
Depending on what devices are connectec or what processes that may be running at any given moment QoS can and will perform "traffic shaping" that can affect the bandwidth needed for accurate speed testing.

Sounds like the same ol" same ol" from Hughesnet. Had my service installed 6 weeks ago and I got the EXACT same problem. Called many times, tested many times with testmy. I am a retired ITO, so I know my way around this high tech stuff. Okay Hughesnet guy, do you seriously think using testmy would bring the dnld from 1 MB to anything substantially higher, that is usable. Go somewhere else to sell your wares.

Want testmy test results? Here's mine.

http://testmy.net/quickstats/Larry%20H
There are several pages.
So click on the more button at the bottom right.
BUT THE HUGHESNET TECHIES THAT I HAVE TALKED TO, ALMOST
EVERY EVENING SINCE INSTALL, DON'T WANT TO SEE THOSE
RESULTS. THEY WOULD RATHER ME DO "MORE" DNLD TESTS
WHILE ON THE PHONE WITH THEM -- AGAIN AND AGAIUN
AND AGAIN. NOTHING HAS BEEN RESOLVED SINCE INSTALL.
BUT THEY DO KNOW HOW TO COLLECT MY MONEY WITHOUT
MISSING A BEAT. SAD!
OH YEAH, MINE HAS BEEN ESCELATED 4 TIMES WITH A 3 DAY
WAIT IN BETWEEN. ESCELATED BUT NEVER ACCELERATED.

Looks like this board can't accept a link. Let's try that again.

Here are my testmy results.

Hi Richknox,

Thanks for posting the new tests results. I'll go ahead and escalate the case up to engineering and see what we can do for you. I'll update you once I have more information.

Thank you,
Chris

No one was chastising you.  It was just instructions for the way the tests need to be done.  Nothing more.

Was it your purpose to be banned, because I am relatively sure that you've succeeded with your constant personal attacks and foul language?

Larry,
Your speed tests are useless.
IF you had started a postt of your own as directed you would have been told to use the manual 12/down, 2/up test.

Chris,
I have heard nothing in the last 2 weeks concerning my slow speeds and it is still very slow. I also see that my plan is not offered anymore, only a plan with about 1/3 of my anytime bytes but the same speed that I thought I had. Has my speed gotten throttled because Hughes doesn't want to support my plan andare trying to chase me to another plan that will not meet my needs. The only time I Have used more than 60% or do of my anytime bytes was when I got a new iPhone. I am not a user that abuses the system. It is really sad that it is this way. Thanks.
