Gen 4 slow down...

ever get the feeling that hughesnet is deliberately bolloxing gen 4 speeds to promote gen5 and get that juicy contract for those of us who have made it through the first one?  Im feeling very roped in here.  I have managed to do eschooling for three years on gen 4 with some problems, but generally doable as long as we have the data (which necessitates us not using it for anything else but i digress) but since they came out with gen 5 ive been having more and more trouble with actually staying online, much less speed.  And now that school has started again this week the kids couldnt even complete their placement tests, literally!! It would NOT let them stay connected long enough or strong enough to complete a few hours of testing, and they didnt even have to have their webcams on which was a requirement for the last two years without issue!! So i call up, after promising the school to do something about this, and the only answer i got, was "Upgrade" Something's rotten in the state of denmark.

The simple answer...no.  While it may lock you into a new contract, they would probably make less money because of the deals available, and that's not exactly good Business 101 practice.  And, actually, I've seen a few people that are on Gen4 claim that their service is improving, and they are surmising it's due to those migrating from to Gen5 and the ES19 satellite.

When you say it wouldn't let them stay connected long enough, do you mean your HughesNet service is having intermittent connection issues, or do you mean it's due to low speeds?

If it's due to intermittent connection issues, the reps will most likely want to run some diagnostics on your system, so it would be best to leave the modem powered (shut off anything that might use data if you are not actively using the internet).

If It's due to low speeds, you should create an account at testmy.net and run a few speed tests under that account.  Make sure to space the tests at least five minutes apart, and, if you are able, it's a good idea to run a batch of 3 - 5 tests at different times of the day.  You need to use the manual 12MB test file for the download tests.  You should also be running the tests with a single device that is directly connected to the modem with a LAN cable (no WiFi).  Once you've run some speed tests, you can post your Results page URL so the tests can be looked at.    http://testmy.net/

The macro below includes the protocol needed for the speed tests, much of which I posted above.

To help the Hughesnet Customer Service Reps get a head start on your speed concerns, you should create a testmy.net account and perform 3-5 tests during different parts of the day. Then share the account results link with us here.

Please keep in mind that Hughesnet will only accept testmy.net and the official Hughesnet speed test results. Tests from other sites like speedtest.net are not accepted due to the compression technologies and latency that satellite deploys.

Most important points to remember during this test:
-do the tests while directly connected to the HughesNet modem with a LAN cable (NO third party Router or Wireless devices can be used)
-use the 12MB size download test file ONLY if on Gen4 Service Plan
-If testing upload instead of download, you must use a 4MB size upload test file
-space each test at least 5 minutes apart
-post your results URL here, it may look something like http://testmy.net/quickstats/C0RR0SIVE

For a more in depth guide on running the tests, please visit: http://customer.kb.hughesnet.com/Pages/7001.aspx

The Reps are on M-F from approximately 8AM to 5PM Eastern. They will be the ones to address your speed issues, but they will need these tests to do so.
