I wasnt aware that there was a limit..

It has been really interesting reading these posts.  I am a new customer to Hughes.  I signed up in July on the 5Gb plan.  I wasn't aware that there was a limit on the amount of data you could use until 3/4 of the way thru my grace period.  I ran out of data with 4-5 days left before my monthly refill. So I bought tokens.

The second month, the same thing happened.  So I decided that the cost of upgrading to the next level, 10Gb, was the same as buying additional tokens on my old plan.

Amazing thing!!  With 2-3 days left until my monthly refill, I have run out of data!!!  Again!!!!

How on earth could I use double the data from previous months without changing my browsing habits????  I am beginning to think that Hughes has it set to drain my account of a certain percentage per day regardless of how much I use in order to get me to purchase more tokens.

I do not watch movies or play games on the internet. I only browse the internet and use facebook.  Needless to say, once my contract is up, I will be leaving Hughes.

Re: I wasnt aware that there was a limit..

Hi Laura,

Welcome to the community and thank you for your post, we want to address your concerns. We were able to locate your account based on your community profile information.

Keep in mind there are countless factors that can use your data:

- more devices are capable of connecting to the internet: phones, tablets, gaming consoles, SmartTVs, and even refrigerators can connect wirelessly to the internet. Keep track of what devices you leave running on Wi-Fi.

- automatic-updates: your computer and any other programs you use will often keep working in the background, even if you're not actively using that program, in order to keep your system/program up-to-date. Anti-virus programs will periodically use your internet connection to check back with their malware database for any updates. You should have an option to turn off auto-updates and/or schedule them for a later time.

- multimedia content: Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, news sites, and other websites will contain videos, animated gifs, and sound clips that may start playing as soon as you land on the site. So much content, so easily available almost everywhere on the internet. For starters, try disabling auto-play video on Facebook:
https://community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet/topics/how_to_disable_autoplay_videos_on_facebook
or adjusting your Netflix playback quality to SD:
https://help.netflix.com/en/node/87

To help you monitor your data usage and other performance metrics, we’ve gathered resources for you here, which also includes community
recommendations: http://community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet/topics/track_your_usage_performance_speeds_and_view_tips_....

The most important tool to download is the Status Meter, available in the Customer Support Center, so download that if you haven’t already:
supportcenter.myhughesnet.com

If you like you are still experiencing unidentified data usage after considering the above, please follow these instructions:

Please disconnect the LAN cable from your modem and note the day and time of the disconnect.

Then take a screenshot of your Status Meter so we can see how much data you have left.

Leave the LAN cable disconnected from the modem for several hours, we recommend doing this overnight or during the day while away at work.

Afterwards, take a second screenshot of your Status Meter and note the time.

Please post your screenshots here and let us know your noted times so we can pick it up from there. Please take care in cropping out your SAN while taking the screenshots.

Your cooperation and patience are greatly appreciated. We look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks,
Liz

Thanks,
Liz

Re: I wasnt aware that there was a limit..

Thank you, Liz, for your ideas. I knew that my phones and other computers would use data. We do not have a smart tv or rrefrigerator or tablets. Only 2 laptops and 1 desktop that is off most of the time. I was concerned because nothing in my household had changed but the usage doubled.
i will use your suggestions and get back with you at a later date.
