New Internet incredibly slow

I just got my satellite internet hooked up and it is ridiculously slow. I live in the middle of nowhere and my data on my phone is faster (and thats saying something!). I just ran the speed test and it stated that download speed is 42.77mbps and upload is 1.56mbps. The web Response test said the download time is 4.1 sec. It does not matter if only one thing is connected to the wifi it's slow. The computer, the phone, everything is ridiculous and stops to load - even facebook. The system like is not flashing, it's steady and its a brand new modem. Any advice?

To have speed issues addressed in this community, first you will need to follow the procedure detailed here: https://community.hughesnet.com/t5/Tech-Support/Think-you-have-slow-speeds/m-p/110034#M74607

When you say "The computer, the phone, everything is ridiculous and stops to load - even facebook.", what do you mean by "stops to load"?

Keep in mind that satellite internet isn't going to be as responsive as ground based service.  Websites tend to take longer to load, even when you have very adequate speed.

It may help to install some type of webpage load time extension in your browser to show how long the pages are taking to load.  "Page load time" is a decent one for Chrome based browsers.

Re: New Internet incredibly slow

GabeU,

By "stops to load" I mean when I open facebook, the app opens and then just sits there. It will load one, maybe two posts and then sit there for a bit. Forget watching a video. It won't even buffer enough so it is clear before I get an error message saying there's a video issue. This computer is fine, as is my iphone. It's only on Hughes it does this.

Just as a troubleshooting step, and if you're able to do so, I would try going to Facebook using a browser on a computer that's connected to the HughesNet modem with a LAN cable, and with the WiFi in the HughesNet modem disabled.  The idea behind this is to ensure that only the LAN cable connected computer is using the internet and no other devices are draining any bandwidth at the same time.  Plus, the LAN cable connected computer will eliminate any WiFi issues themselves as a possible cause.

I would also still run some speed tests, as maratsade suggested, as speed test results will help the reps to know where the problem may lie.  The linked speed test instructions also explain how to disable the WiFi in the modem.

Similar experience. New customer and this slow torture is shock treatment after having Spectrum. The monthly fee is shameful. There is such a thing as "fair trade" and this isn't even close.

This is what the test said tonight. Do I just run random ones all day?

Re: New Internet incredibly slow

I so relate to that torture. I got internet to try and save my hotspot as I am in college. I am so discouraged with it.

It's best to run a batch of 3-5 tests, spacing each test at least five minutes apart.  Ideally, a batch in the morning, a batch in the afternoon and a batch in the evening, but HughesNet knows that it's not convenient for a lot of people to do this, so just a batch or two will probably be enough, and when you can.

Also, please be sure to use the manual 25MB test size for download tests and the manual 4MB test size for upload tests.  This keeps it uniform.

You can even set it up to run five tests automatically.  To do so, click "Automatic Speed Test" on the main page, and set it up like the following.  The Identifier can be anything you like, but everything else should be exactly like you see it in the pic.  Then click "Start Automatic Test" to run them and keep the browser page open.  It will run all five tests.  Also make sure you're signed in to your testmy.net account when you run them.

This makes it easier than having to come back to the computer every five minutes to run another test.

Then you can post a link to your results by posting your quickstats URL, which is the following.  I really only needs to be posted once, as it never changes.
