No HD on Youtube

I turned off VDS and started a YT video. Horrible resolution and lots of buffering, no matter where I watched it. Speed test shows 24 Mbps. Didn’t matter if I used the 2 or 5 channel. Rebooted, no change.

I hooked up our old DSL system and YT works perfectly. Speed test = 4.83 Mbps.

Why?

Yeh, I don't get it myself.  Was on a problem beam 55 in California and had speed issues.... Switched back to ES17 and speeds on testmy.net show fine, up in the 20Mbps range yet I can't even stream YouTube 240p vids w/o buffering.  That is with VDS on.

20Mbps should slice through 240p YouTube.  Kinda stinks.

I can only guess whatever Hughes does to degrade video to SD resolution to use less data somehow affects playback of any video.  Something is just not right.... 20Mbps again should slice through simple 240p video.

I just switched to 4 hour of snooze and 240p playing fine... 360p seems OK.  But ut should do the same with VDS on.  Bums me out I have to snooze it to play simple YouTubes.

If we can’t get YT working correctly we will have to cancel. We watch at least 1-2 hours of YT every day, and we watch in HD. Our 5 Mbps network handles that with no buffering. I’m no IT specialist, but this makes no sense to me.

I’ve been wondering why people said that if you have DSL, don’t change. I had high hopes, but I’m disappointed right now. If all I was doing was downloading I’d be real happy, but in this day and age if you can’t stream, you’re left behind.

I just don't see that happening.  HD video gobbles up lotsa of GB.  If you have a 20GB plan, and expect to watch videos in HD, you will blow out of data well before your month is up.... which means you will be placed in FAP and have slower speeds for remainder of month.

1 Hour of SD quality video eats 400MB.  So if you watch 2 hours per day in just SD quality alone, you will also eat through your data in less than 30 days.  Unless you have the 50GB plan of course.

Does seem something is causing the YouTube stream to stop and buffer lately, even at lower definitions. It works fine the first couple minutes then tanks and buffers or stops completely. No idea if on YouTube side or HughesNet.

But like macsociety says, expecting to do HD on capped data satellite for even 1-2 hours a day is unrealistic. Two hours of HD is going to use at least 3-4 GB of data, probably more. Multiply that by 30 days and you are hosed data wise, nothing left after 3-5 days depending on plan. Even 50 GB Anytime plan you're talking maybe 10 days max.

Again, something is wrong with YouTube streams lately.

It would be nice if our current ISP would let us know our usage, but they don’t. So if 50GB won’t cut it even if YT is working right (which it isn’t), then I should just go ahead and cancel.

Keep in mind that, though the issue with Youtube not playing in HD when you have the Video Data Saver off should definitely be adressed, you'd be subject to an Early Termination Fee if cancelling the service.  Going over your data amount isn't grounds for termination without an ETF.

With regard to Youtube, have you tried it with a device that is connected directly to the modem with a LAN cable instead of through WiFi?

Gabe - we just got hooked up on Monday, so we should still be well within the initial 30 day window. No, we haven’t hooked anything directly to the modem. It’s in the laundry room. My iPad has shown us having speeds between 24 - 51 Mbps in the same time period that it cannot play a YT video.

And honestly, it’s discouraging that I started this thread on Tuesday and no HN reps have responded.

...and we are cancelled, no ETF! Really wished that it had worked because I loved those download speeds. Not only the YT issues, my wife couldn’t access a number of sites that she needs for business.

Best of luck to you.

Yeh the slow YouTube is a pain.  Makes no sense when we show good speeds.

I think in most cases any internet with low ping and no latency issues is a better bet for those with media needs or VPN.

I live in the sticks and can't get cable or dsl.  I can get wireless from cell companies but the cost after using the 50GB is outrageous.

So I went back to Satellite for now... it is unlimited service to a degree although slower after 20GB used and streaming is hit and miss.  Something I will have to live with for now.

That was good of them.  When you mentioned the 30 day trial my stomach sank, as there is no 30 day trial period, unfortunately.  So, again, that was good of them that they allowed you to cancel so quickly without the ETF.

I hope your new ISP meets your needs and works well.  🙂

Yes, we have the 50GB plan specifically for that purpose.
