Slow Internet and DNS Server

Just switched from Dish to Hughes Net Gen 5 Satellite service and was initially very disappointed in its performance.  Could not obtain anywhere near the 25mps Hughes advertised as guaranteed.  What was really frustrating was doing my genealogy research and even a simple 5.7kb image would take minutes to download.

After trying a variety of different things which included several frustrating calls to Tech Support I noticed that DNS errors were appearing on the status table at Hughes net website.

Several articles seemed to point to DNS servers as a possible problem.  I found GRC's  DNS Benchmark product.  Decided to try it and the program came back with a list from fatest to slowest DNS servers.  Entered the two fatest into the Hughes router setup and it made a huge difference.  My download speeds have increased tremendously and my genealogy images take only seconds to load.

A lot of the users here that have been around for a few years now, typically recomend avoiding using an ISP supplied DNS, and to use a third party...

Here are some popular choices, take note, they may not be "fast" according to DNS benchmarks, as such benchmarks on satellite are easily fouled due to latency.

Google IPv4
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Google IPv6
2001:4860:4860::8888
2001:4860:4860::8844

Norton Security: Malware, Phishing Sites, Scam Sites
199.85.126.10
199.85.127.10

Norton Security + Pornography: Malware, Phishing Sites, Scam Sites, and Websites with sexually explicit content
199.85.126.20
199.85.127.20

Norton Security + Pornography + Other: Both the above, but also adds in "mature content, abortion, alcohol, crime, drugs, file sharing, gambling, hate, suicide, tobacco, and violence" as additional filters.  This is the most strict.
199.85.126.30
199.85.127.30

Open DNS is another option.

Primary:  208.67.222.222

Alternate:  208.67.220.220

Just a word of caution:

Be real careful with some of these secondary DNS options and discontinue using them if you see anything strange happening.

Nortons I'd be inclined to trust, but OpenDNS may be subject to spoofing. For example, if the DNS is spoofed, it may send you to an unscrupulous site that runs a simple javescript that lifts your entire password file and sends it to someone in the Ukraine.
