Speed drop

Speed drop in the last month.  1100 modem, beam 34.  Speeds have dropped from 5 digits download to as low a 1 meg.  Haven't seen decent download or upload speeds in over a month.  It used to be great.  All diagnostics on the modem check OK.  Signal strength is always the same.

Hello pbparker,

Not necessarily for us. Everything should be leveled out by now. Would just recommend using the service normally and if you run into new issues let us know.

Thanks for your quick reply.  Hope "tweaking" somewhere else doesn't ruin the speeds I've got now. Personally, I know how much engineers like to "tweak".

Thanks again.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled NO DOWNLOAD SPEED-TWEAKING didn't help!.

After a few days of decent communication speeds I have been unable to download several sites due to the collapse of the download speed, under 1Mbps. Weather is good and speed fails during any time, not just certain hours.

What's the excuse this time, meteor shower?

Not sure what is going on with your system. I am sure others will be able to help. Mine is still smoking with the same route.

I only just discovered this feature under the Member Rank tab on the HughesNet page......duh.

Hi pbparker,

I see your recent tests. There have been a few trending escalation calls into our call center from people on your gateway however I do not think it is something to worry about yet. I would run a few more tests. The ones you have are during a short time. As I mentioned, if it continues to be consistently low then we can certainly look further into it. That last one was not too bad. The service will always fluctuate, it is just the nature of the beast. Weather at your location, weather at your gateways location, etc can cause brief slowdowns. If you continue to experience this feel free to post again.

Thanks,
Chris

He sometimes acts like an idiot ( did he really say that?) but, still better than the alternative.

I understand the weather, etc., but this slowdown was over two days.  Why that 14meg download snuck in is not understandable.

Please, let's leave politics out of the posts.  Thanks.

Good find. There doesn't appear to be any consistency at all.  If you hit a good time you don't complain and vice versa.

Mine's consistently above 15 Mbps except during peak times. Even then it is perfectly usable. I never expected to see 30+ speeds.

I haven't been able to to any work today using the Internet.  My speeds are so slow many pages time out.  Could someone find out what happened to the "tweaking"?

While I agree your speeds are terrible. Mine continue to be excellent. We take the exact same route to access the Internet. Not trying to rub it in. Just wondering if it could be something on your end?

Nope, today I got a 21 and an 8 download.  The equipment can't work one day, not the next, and work again. Noticed your speeds yesterday (Saturday) and thought the same thing we're only 15 miles apart and you're getting decent downloads and mine are almost non-existent.

Well, it could  .. moisture condensing in the feedhorn due to a bad seal for example would do it. But that should show up through remote diagnostics.

In the end it very well may get down to the individual uplink and downlink servers you have within the Gateway facility.

Ah, good old water in feedhorn. Talk about doing screwy things.

Is the feedhorn the thing with the round, plastic cover on it that looks back at the dish and which the dish reflects the signal into?

Yep, looks a bit different on the different systems but basically the same. They all will eventually break down given enough time. Some sooner, some much later.

Nah, that's too easy.  When the antenna was first installed ( about two years ago) I was aware of the problem and wrapped Teflon tape around the perimeter of the feed horn.  Just checked it and it's fine.  All diagnostics are green and the history shows no problems.  Here's the server;

Still have no real communication today. Ran the self test and connectivity tests, all OK. Still no speed;

  • No weather problems here either.  If somebody knows how I could download the archived records, problem is I can't open them with that gz suffix.
