Unused data usage

This afternoon neither one of us was working online.   All auxiliary devices were also offline ( their Wi-Fi connections were switched into OFF mode.)   I checked our allowance before deciding whether to go online or not and saw that we were at 90%.....i went to get a cup of coffee and came back and told her that i was going to go online that we had 90% and SHE SAID:  no, i just checked, we're at 65.  i looked on my laptop and sure enough, 65% and the ONLY thing we both had done (connectively-wise) was check our status on Hughe.net   WHAT happened to that 25%....???   !!!

Would it even be possible that there could be that many updates on a device during the time it takes to get a cup of coffee, do you have guest wi-fi & are your passwords secure !!!??? I would like to hear the answer on this one !!!???

nothing. at. all. online.   nada.

i clicked-on to see how much data we had left and clicked off.   about two minutes later she clicked-on to check the very same thing (and clicked off.)  and when i clicked on to confirm... that was the third like 4 second connection the entire day. It's almost as if we witnessed a data drain done by......????  Hughes.net?  i am highly suspicious but She said it was 'their algorithm adjustment'.  i think i hate Hughes.net more than she does.

Are you using Windows 10?  If so be sure it is set to metered connection under Wi-Fi settings.  Even if it looks off Windows 10 will keep running to get their updates installed.  It is the M$ way of tracking you.  Once you turned it on to check your data 10 will take over.

Good morning dutchdog,

Thanks for posting. We can help address your concerns. First you want to isolate your computer and run a malware scan. This way we can ensure there isn't a virus that's using your connection without your knowledge.

We can't tell what is using your data, but you may want to look into using a third-party data monitoring program to help you pinpoint the programs on your PC that use the most data. Community members have suggested and used GlassWire, so feel free to ask them for tips on using it: https://www.glasswire.com

As Gary Hall mentioned, Windows 10 does push updates often without your knowledge, so that's something else to consider. There are plenty of other factors to keep in mind:

- more devices are capable of connecting to the internet: phones, tablets, gaming consoles, SmartTVs, and even refrigerators can connect wirelessly to the internet. Keep track of what devices you leave running on Wi-Fi.

- automatic-updates: your computer and any other programs you use will often keep working in the background, even if you're not actively using that program, in order to keep your system/program up-to-date. Anti-virus programs will periodically use your internet connection to check back with their malware database for any updates. You should have an option to turn off auto-updates and/or schedule them for a later time.

- multimedia content: Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, news sites, and other websites will contain videos, animated gifs, and sound clips that may start playing as soon as you land on the site. So much content, so easily available almost everywhere on the internet. For starters, try disabling auto-play video on Facebook:
https://community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet/topics/how_to_disable_autoplay_videos_on_facebook
or adjusting your Netflix playback quality to SD:
https://help.netflix.com/en/node/87

- more data sources can be found here, as posted by a fellow community member: https://community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet/topics/data-usage-sources-common-and-not-so-common

If ever there's any suspicion that HughesNet is the cause of unidentified data usage, please follow these steps:

We are happy to escalate any proof of the HughesNet modem to our engineers to address.

on 3/24
We went from 70% tonight at about 8-9 pm to 0 by about 1 am. Nothing unusual—  in fact i was on spreadsheet program most of the time with nothing else running. NO ipod connected you were asleep most of the time etc. I got a couple emails but nothing big.

and TODAY!!!!   we used a token, bought 50% and saw our 'usage' drop from 50% to 38% in 5 minutes.   only one laptop on and only online with emails.   nothing else.   at all.

why are you draining us dry????
what did we ever do to you?

disgraceful drainage....it's actually stealing isn't it.   you guys are stealing from us.

Truthfully, 99.9% it is something on your end eating it. I know from my own experience not because I'm supporting Hughes.

If you can show some real proof that you are the  .1% then many of us here will give you a medal and Hughes may even give you free service for a year. I know the engineers would love to find a leak if there really is one. I honestly believe they are not deliberately stealing data.

Hughesnet does not steal data. You, a device, or someone else is using the data.

You may have a compromised computer... Check out Malwarebytes, it is the best Anti-malware i know of.

I would also check out glasswire it has a firewall to block programs from accessing the net, and has great data usage tools. Even if all you are doing is checking your email, your computer is still doing other things, updating programs, uploading/downloading info, and a lotta other things. Check out glasswire it helps A LOT in determining what is using data, but must be installed on each machine.

you're far more trusting than we are.   we've been watching them suck it for years.   we're lo-tech.   no cell service out here so nothing, no smart phones on wi-fi...nada.  Only our laptops and we shut everything down (ie quit the application as soon as we're done) when we are not actively using.   Most of the time we're working the farm.   and nothing is online at all.   we use Macs, so no programming downloads without us actively setting it...and we only do that kind of stuff at night during the free periods.

i really got an eye opening experience just now.   i went to the BBB and saw there there are literally thousands of complaints against Hughes.net.

I've heard of Mac's sucking data the same as Windows. Thousands compared to a million plus customers. Have you looked at other ISP complaints like Comcast, AT&T, etc.? Truthfully the BBB is a bit of a joke when it comes to really addressing customer complaints.

How about also turning off the modem at night? Still data loss?
