Your download totals are wrong.....

If I had any other choice where I live I would have dumped your service long ago. I get faster internet hooked to my i-phone thru verizon at 3g then I do with your service but like you they have limits on how much you can download in a month. My problem now is that we exceeded our limit, OK I got a new computer and there were updates so I can live with that. What I can't live with is that I went to your site and it shows usage when we were asleep and when we weren't home. The computers were off and I do not have any appliances hooked to the internet. Can you explain this?

Re: Your download totals are wrong.....

We have the same issue. None of those tools helped identify where the usage is coming from and now we pay $400.00 some months. I have changed my WIFI password in hopes that this might stop someone from surfing the net on our dime, but little has changed. We typically run through all of our data allowance about 10 to 15 days after the allowance is reset.

Re: Your download totals are wrong.....

Hi RayandDeb,

Thank you for your post. I understand your frustration and want to let you know that we are here to help. As Charles stated, the first thing to try is isolating your Hughesnet modem to see if that is the source of the unidentified data usage. Although, please take care in cropping out your SAN while taking the screenshots before you post them on the forum.

When it comes to data usage keep in mind there are countless factors that can use your data:

- more devices are capable of connecting to the internet: phones, tablets, gaming consoles, SmartTVs, and even refrigerators can connect wirelessly to the internet. Keep track of what devices you leave running on Wi-Fi.

- automatic-updates as you suggested in your post: your computer and any other programs you use will often keep working in the background, even if you're not actively using that program, in order to keep your system/program up-to-date. Anti-virus programs will periodically use your internet connection to check back with their malware database for any updates. You should have an option to turn off auto-updates and/or schedule them for a later time.

- multimedia content: Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, news sites, and other websites will contain videos, animated gifs, and sound clips that may start playing as soon as you land on the site. So much content, so easily available almost everywhere on the internet. For starters, try disabling auto-play video on Facebook:

https://community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet/topics/how_to_disable_autoplay_videos_on_facebook

or adjusting your Netflix playback quality to SD: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/87

- more data sources can be found here, as posted by a fellow community member: https://community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet/topics/data-usage-sources-common-and-not-so-common

The most important tool to download is the Status Meter, available in the Customer Support Center, so download that if you haven’t already:

Your cooperation and patience are greatly appreciated. We look forward to hearing back from you.

Thanks,

Re: Your download totals are wrong.....

First off I don't have a refrigerator that is surfing the net using up my data plan.  Second if I watch TV it is on the TV not on my computer.  My problem sir is that I checked your website and it showed us downloading huge amounts of data when we were asleep or not home and nothing in this house was on much less hooked to the internet.  And before you even bring it up there are no way I have neighbors hacking into my internet.  My closest neighbor is at least 250 ft. away and there is no way he can pick up the signal from our router at his house.  The service drops off my phone when I get about 50 ft. from my house so I have checked this already.

You need to check and upgrade your equipment instead of blaming your customers for all of the problems with your service.  As far as your suggestions to save on bandwidth they are ridiculous, its like you are saying you can use a car but only this Model T and we are going to charge you twice what the Cadillac costs.  Your data caps aren't even feasible in this day and age except that you are the only game in town for most of us.  But I have a feeling that is going to come to an end here in the near future.  Cable companies are starting to expand their service areas as well as AT&T expanding DSL and fiber optics.

If you want to stay in this game you will need to do a whole lot of improvements over what you have to offer now.   The reality is that as other providers start to move into your market territory your customers will leave in droves because you can't or won't provide the services that we want and they can.  We shouldn't have to disable everything to use the internet, especially our virus programs.  Above all I want mine to update anytime it wants to.

Re: Your download totals are wrong.....

Hi RayandDeb,

I understand your concerns. If there is something happening to your Hughesnet modem while you are not using it, we do have a process to eliminate it as a factor. Taking the steps that Charles nicely mentioned is the best bet. When you get the time please follow the steps and post a screenshot. I am here to help. I'm sure we can determine the source of your data usage.

Since when did AT&T expand anything?  They are known among most everyone to be pulling back and getting rid of DSL/Fiber lines in favor of cellular data (more costly than Hughes) these days.

Re: Your download totals are wrong.....

Nothing coming my way other than satellite in my lifetime from what I can tell. Could move over to 4g but all the companies "unlimited" is not really, gets throttled after about 5-10GB, plus would actually cost more in most cases than what I'm paying now for Hughes.

But my system has performed well ever since I switched to Gen4 just over two years ago.

You can take the offers to help here or continue to complain about the limitations of satellite internet, such as data caps, which won't change. The choice is always up to the individual. You will always have to monitor your usage on a capped data plan.

Re: Your download totals are wrong.....

There sure seems to be a lot of posts on here about data drain but I don't see where any of it has been resolved.  Hughesnet just wants us to unplug and plug back in the router and take snapshots of their meter.  Well I was going to do that but with this new computer I would have to download another program to do that.  And I can't afford to download anything.  I bought 2 gigs of added download and at around 7:30 I had 2.1 Gigs at around 11pm I checked again and I was down to 240+-mb left.  Where did it all go?  I was not on the internet and I am the only one home.  I also made sure that nothing will update until after 2 am so it's not that either.  AND NO MY REFRIDGERATOR IS NOT WATCHING PORN ON THE INTERNET......
