Re: slow internet speeds even after plan upgrade

Please clarify, when you say everything looks fine on one tool, your not talking download speed, are you? I should be getting up to 15Mbps with my plan and I am experiencing 785 Kbps tonight at 8:56 PM.  I can watch 720p Youtube videos with WiFi on my neighbor's CenturyLink DSL service with absolutely no buffering.  I'll try the Asus router tomorrow but I'm losing confidence with Hughesnet.

Re: slow internet speeds even after plan upgrade

Looks like network congestion to me honestly...  If DSL was available, why didn't you go that route?  While satellite can somewhat keep up with, and beat the average DSL connection, it's not really a suitable alternative in my opinion.

Re: slow internet speeds even after plan upgrade

Obviously, I didn't do my homework.  We built our house in a remote, Midwest area and phone lines weren't close by. I had Excede satellite but the local computer repairman highly recommended Hughesnet and it's Ultra plan.  I was told that I couldn't get the Ultra plan because it was not offered in my area.  I am physically 7.8 miles from the computer guy's house.  Not that is spot coverage.

Re: slow internet speeds even after plan upgrade

Amanda, I have the ASUS router installed now.  Can you see how that seems to be working?  I am not opposed to reconfiguring either of my routers if you can tell me what changes I need to make to settings.

Re: slow internet speeds even after plan upgrade

budkeil,

Amanda didn't specify the issue she seen but ....

Were you by any chance running a third party firmware on your router?

I have an Asus RT-AC3100. When I had the Asus firmware installed the Hughes Modem correctly identified my router as an Asus. Once I installed the Merlin firmware the Modem correctly reports the Routers MAC address but ID's it as "unknown".

A couple of common modem/router issues:

The Hughes Modem is hardwired for 192.168.0.1

This IP can not be changed and should not be shared with any other device.

Check your Routers LAN IP. Suggested setting is 192.168.1.1

Be sure to disable QoS if doing speed tests (once baseline performance values have been established by a direct connect)

Be sure to enable DHCP in the Router.

Re: slow internet speeds even after plan upgrade

Hi budkeil

The error has cleared - essentially it was saying it was not receiving correct subnet configurations from the router, or they were mismatched. However the ASUS is configured seems to be fine. Have you noticed any performance changes since you put in the ASUS?

Thanks
Amanda

Re: slow internet speeds even after plan upgrade

Gwalk900, I am not running a third party firmware on either of my routers.

Amanda, the performance is still lousy.  My desk computer won't even run a 360p Youtube video without buffering.  With the Asus router installed, Testmy.net speeds are 2.1 Mbps at 8:25 pm.

Re: slow internet speeds even after plan upgrade

Just in case, is QoS disabled as well as some of the Routers internal "services" that can suck up a very narrow bandwidth pipe?

I had some stuff enabled in the Asus and it used 1/2 GB in two days.

Yes I know its a "reach", just covering the bases.

Amanda will be off until Monday ... Corporate level perk.

Re: slow internet speeds even after plan upgrade

Finally solved my problem.  Canceled Hughesnet and got CenturyLink DSL.  Now I am getting the 10Mbps that I expected instead of as low as 518Kbps at 1/3 the price.  When I asked about Gen5, I was required to sign up for a new 24 month service contract with no assurances that the speed would be better. I won't fall for that again.
