Question.. I see a lot of posts about data usage getting used up... Mine is the oppisit. I have several items that run on wifi etc I keep checking the meter several times a day as I have a 4 yr old that loves his tablet and streams kids youtube! My meter will show 1% used at the end of day then next morning I check it and it says 100% remaining!!!!!! is this normal or not working right? I want to make sure I'm not going to run over or anything but I don't understand how it says 100% remaining the next day.. I'm a facebook junkie as well so always online. I mean if its working right its cool with me but ....

If you're a new customer within the first 20 days, your data allowance will reset every day as a courtesy to give you extra data so that any of your computers that may have been offline and haven't updated for a while have plenty of data to use.

Good morning Tammy!

Yes, as Alan said, if you're still within the first 20 days of your HughesNet service, update everything you can!

Paula, I just got hughes net as its my only option for internet. I have seen so many posts about data being used up and it scares me!!!! I'm hoping I can manage usage well and unplug and turn off things when not in use in hopes to not use all data but time will tell!!

Here are some additional tips to help you manage your data allowance:

Keep in mind there are countless factors that can use your data:

- more devices are capable of connecting to the internet: phones, tablets, gaming consoles, SmartTVs, and even refrigerators can connect wirelessly to the internet. Keep track of what devices you leave running on Wi-Fi.

- automatic-updates: your computer and any other programs you use will often keep working in the background, even if you're not actively using that program, in order to keep your system/program up-to-date. Anti-virus programs will periodically use your internet connection to check back with their malware database for any updates. You should have an option to turn off auto-updates and/or schedule them for a later time.

- multimedia content: Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, news sites, and other websites will contain videos, animated gifs, and sound clips that may start playing as soon as you land on the site. So much content, so easily available almost everywhere on the internet. For starters, try disabling auto-play video on Facebook: https://community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet/topics/how_to_disable_autoplay_videos_on_facebook or adjusting your Netflix playback quality to SD: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/87

-DirecTV On Demand or the Dish Hopper can use A LOT of data, you may want to disconnect it when not in use.

- more data sources can be found here, as posted by a fellow community member: https://community.myhughesnet.com/hughesnet/topics/data-usage-sources-common-and-not-so-common

Thanks,
Liz

If you have a YouTube account be sure to set playback option in setting to never stream higher definition:

If no account then be sure to use the gear icon in the YouTube player as soon as the video starts and set it to 360p or 240p. Lower definition will use much less data plus will look fine on lower size tablet screens.
