First, there's the issue of how many bits make a byte: Is it the actual data word? Does it include parity and control bits? Does it include repetitive protocols required for forward error correction? It's not pretty, and hella confusing. Second, there's the issue of the actual measurement, since no one can agree if 1k = 1,000 or 1,024, but that's a whole 'nother kettle o' wax.
