East Coast Weather Alert & Tips

Hello everyone,

As many of you may know, the east coast will be expecting some heavy rain, winds and snow in the next couple of days. This includes a blizzard right on our main network operations center and headquarters. Please also consider that you may be impacted by this in a couple of ways:

1. Weather at your home could impair your connectivity (strong winds, snow buildup on dish, thick cloud cover)
2. Weather at the network operations center or gateway that provide signal to your home

In addition, technicians in the way of these storms may not be able to safely get to your home and may need to reschedule appointments, so please be mindful of that.

Essentially, if you can wait the snow out on the dish to melt that is a great way to go. If you cannot, lightly brush off the snow and if your dish is not mounted to a pole, be very careful climbing ladders!

Stay safe and warm this weekend everyone !

Basically don't risk life or limb trying to keep your dish cleaned off.

Stay safe Amanda, they are forecasting 14+ inches for my area over the next 24 hours, with a high chance of freezing rain to start. Smiley Sad

Also, pretty sure we won't have reps tomorrow or monday depending on how bad yall get hit.

Re: East Coast Weather Alert & Tips

Pretty bad here already, 1 foot drifts, 25mph winds, and 3+ inches of fresh with the potential for 13 more inches on top of that over the course of today....  Good luck Hughesnet, this is a monster of a storm.

An hour before this picture was taken, you could clearly see our driveway and the road out by the mail box, can't really tell where they are now.

On the bright side, if my dish is clear I get a signal of about 90 even with how heavy the snowfall is.

As long as there are no power outages we'll be all good!

You haven't lived until you've seen "lake effect" snow coming ashore across Lake Michigan. Getting 18" overnight right along shoreline is common along with 50-60 mph winds.

Its a lot like looking into the south end of a polar bear facing north.

Re: East Coast Weather Alert & Tips

Gwalk900, back in the 90's we got hit with a blizzard that dumped about 2 foot worth of snow in the course of a day.  Trust me, we have seen "lake effect" style snow even this far inland before.  Actually, if the wind currents are strong enough, and the weather patterns just right, lake-effect snow from there can actually make it down to KY, it has happened before.

A lot of problem northeners and people in the mountains have, is they forget that KY rarely gets this much snow at one time, so fast, we don't have enough road crews or equipment to keep things cleared and going.

Right now, about a fourth of the state down south is with out power due to the ice-storm part earlier on, and they are closing interstates and highways here because the trucks just can't keep up.  They have gone as far as having rows of trucks staggered side by side pushing snow and even then the dumptrucks are struggling to keep it clear and put enough salt down on the major highways.

So yeah, it is comparable when you consider the difference in snow crews and historical weather patterns that have shaped each states methods of clearing and dealing with snowfall like this.

Waiting for it to start here on the eastern shore of MD. Just across the bay from the NOC. They are supposed to get hammered. We are expecting 10+ with lots of wind.
