Download speed below 1mbs

Hi,

    My download speeds have been slowing for the last week. Tonight they have dropped well below 1mbs.

   I am currently doing my taxes and this is causing me a lot of stress. It is difficult to download the information I need. I am worried that the speeds will continue to drop and I will not be able to access the internet at all.

Hello thomflan,

Welcome to our community.  I agree these definitely do not look right and see that in the early mornings you have great speeds, while at night they are extremely slow. We will escalate this to our engineers to evaluate what changes can be made or tweaked to get you better performance. I will return with an update as soon as I have one.

Hello,

I am actively discussing your case with an engineer here in our operations center. He will be able to tell me what he sees going on and run his own tools to check the health of your equipment and our network route that provides your service. He has the record of your speed tests to refer to, as well. I will give you an update as soon as he gets back to me.

Hi Amanda,

        Please do not take anything I say in this message as a personal attack. I am just very frustrated with Hughesnet and I am seriously thinking about changing internet providers. I pay $91 a month for the 50gb, 50gb plan. I have never used all my data because the performance is so slow at night. In fact many months I use more Bonus bytes than Anytime data.

        The internet was our main source of entertainment, but that is no longer the case

      Issue 1. Internet Gaming.
                        When I signed up the advertising material said my plan was suitable for playing games on the internet. I immediately found that games were unplayable at night. I found that if I got up at  4:30 am the ping or lag would be in the 625 to 700 ms range. This made playing games hard but manageable. It did seriously detract from the enjoyment. I did some research and found this is a limitation of satellite technology. However on the weekends or holidays when I had more free time, the ping would go well over a second by 8 am which made everything unplayable. On weekdays the situation was a little better I could usually play until I had to start my workday. However as I said any later in the day the lag was such that gaming is impossible.

                        Lately, the last couple of weeks, even on weekdays the lag goes well over a second by 7 am. I feel like a fool for paying $91 a month for something that makes me get up hours early just to use, but I am not going to start getting up at 2 am.


     Issue 2.  Multiple Users.
                      In a word no! Other than the early hours of the morning when I am the only one stupid enough to be up just to use the internet this does not work.

    Issue 3.  Watching video when we have time to do so.
                       Most nights the service is to slow to watch videos, night is the time when we have the free time to watch videos. This has caused serious conflict in my family. Not only can we not each watch what we want, we cannot even watch one thing. Lately some nights the service has been so slow, 600 to 800 kbs that I have had a hard time downloading the information I need to do my taxes.

    Issue 4. Fixing problems.
                      Every other internet provider I have had has quickly responded and fixed any problems that occurred.

   Summation.
             I am the only person in my family getting any use out of the internet. That is only because I get up at a ridiculous hour before my workday starts. Even that is now starting to fail. If all I can do is check my email and order things online I can do that in town for free. Please my internet needs to work better or I will cancel it at the end of the month.

             Some test results from last night. The test size is 1.3 mb because when I tried to do 12 mb the page would time out before the test was completed.

Hi Tom

Just got word that improvements were made the Friday before Super Bowl weekend (the 3rd) but since there was an increase in traffic you may not have seen it right away. Can you let me know if now the speeds have improved at all during peak time? Engineering would also like to know if there is any change too.

Hi Amanda,

         Things have improved. Friday night my slowest speed test was 1.35 mb the fastest 2.56 mb with most of the tests over 2 mb. Much better than the 600 kb I was experiencing afew days ago. Also my ping has generally returned to 650 ms. in the mornings allowing me to do a little gaming before I start my work day.
