I had posted in the community that my download performance was slower than upload, and is that way regardless of time of day. Of course, this initiated a string of nastygrams that I wasn't playing by the rules. So here's my data: Echostar XVII, beam 14, gateway 2, outroute 16. Here are the results from the Hughes speedtest. The sudden drop in performance is clearly evident. My SamKnows dashboard shows identical performance, with the degradation starting November 28th, and remaining at a low level, frequently below 1Mbs. Nothing has changed at my site, the dish has not moved (signal level is the same as it has been for years) and there is no change on either of the other two dishes alongside the Hughes dish... one steerable, one for Dish TV.

Good morning Kirk,
Thank you for posting and describing your experiences. I've pulled up your account to run diagnostics to ensure the HughesNet equipment is working normally, and all looks fine right now.
So we can begin addressing your speed concerns, please create a testmy.net account and run 3 tests. Post your test results link here in your thread.
I ask for testmy.net speed tests because if I need to escalate to engineering, they will ask for this anyway.
Most important points to remember during this test:
-do the tests while directly connected to the HughesNet modem with a LAN cable (NO third party Router or Wireless devices can be used)
-use the 12MB size download test file ONLY if on Gen4 Service Plan
-space each test at least 5 minutes apart
-post your results URL here, it may look something like http://testmy.net/quickstats/C0RR0SIVE
For a more in depth guide on running the tests, please visit: http://customer.kb.hughesnet.com/Pages/7001.aspx
Your cooperation, patience, and understanding are much appreciated.
Frankly, Liz, the test you recommend, and its associated instruction set, further deflates my opinion of Hughes. You provide a speed test as part of the support options, but your engineers can't rely on your own diagnostic? I'm supposed to go to a third party site and utilize their test? Why does Hughes provide a speed test if your own people can't rely on it. I am totally flabbergasted!
Though I am certainly not quoting any Hughes representatives, nor do I know for sure, but from what I've seen I have come to the conclusion that the Hughes test itself is for Hughes customers to get a general idea of their speed, but not much more, and while it normally tends to give accurate info, it can be wonky at times. Also, while it gives basic speed results, that's all it gives. No additional info.
The engineers rely on the testmy.net test not only for its accuracy, but also for the additional info it gives. It also tests speed in a very different way than the Hughes test.

The answer is: Perceptions.
In the way-back-when Hughes only accepted their own in-house speed test. One major complaint was that it allowed Hughes to manipulate the results/ Another was that it was java based at the time. Still another factor was that there were only two Hughes platforms in use.
While they did update to a non-java based test many users still belly ached about in-house "tinkering".
Not all speed tests are going to report accurate results on a satellite connection due in part to the high latency inherent to a satellite connection. The testmy speed test works well with high latency among things such as logging results and allowing for manual tests of various sizes so that the results are accurate for a wide range of system platforms that Hughes has in use.
As a third party site that (should) put to rest the "manipulation" complaint.
Yep! We're having fun now! slower than dialup. I'll have your beloved testmy results in a few minutes...

Not to argue that your speeds aren't awful, as they definitely are, but they're not slower than dialup. That 259kbps is about seven times the speed of the average dialup.
Again, though, that's not an attempt to disregard the issue, but only addressing a claim seen far too often that is almost never really true.
BTW, it's not on stilts, but just to add a little levity....
AND YET ANOTHER RIP ROARING NIGHT ON BEAM 14... AND I PAY HOW MUCH FOR THIS?

TRIED TO POST MY PERFORMANCE CHART FROM SAM KNOWS, BUT CANT CREATE A FORMAT THAT WILL POST ON THIS SITE. SUFFICE IT TO SAY THAT IT IS A NEAR VERTICAL SLOPE DOWN TO THE X AXIS STARTING ABOUT FIVE DAYS AGO...
Good morning Kirk,
Thank you for your testmy.net tests, that's all I requested, no need for anything else. I'll escalate your case to engineering and add a note that you're one of the SamKnows participants. I'll post back once I have any updates to share.
Your cooperation, patience, and understanding are much appreciated.
Hi Kirk,
An engineer will run some automated tests over the weekend in an effort to address your concerns. Once I have any news to share, I will post back.
Your patience and understanding are much appreciated.
