Gen4 Ultra speeds are slow, and not what is expected of the plan.

I had Hughesnet installed last week with the expectation of my wife being able to use it to work remote. My wife even asked the sales person on the phone if Hughsnet could be used for video conferencing, and the person stated "Yes." So today I received a call from my wife stating the internet (WIFI) is taking forever to load, and was better off using her Hot Spot on her 3G phonble e. I did a few speed test, and discovered the speeds were far from 15MB! This is not what I'm paying $100+ per month for. The router is a new Netgear R6300. Is there something that needs to be tweeked to get the speed up? The cable is new and weather is clear. I have seen where other have had the same problem.

jdfmp, where at did you perform the speedtest?  What software is your wife trying to use for video conferencing?

jdfmp, do not use there built in speed test it lies.  Go to www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ or http://www.bandwidthplace.com/  

Skype barely works, if you turn the settings way down and don't mind the lag.  I would never try to VC for work however.

I see this is your first post here, so welcome to the community! I'm sorry to hear that your expectations aren't being met. I was able to pull up your account using your profile information and I do see the speed tests on your account. 



From what I can see you ran these tests at night? During peak hours, due to network traffic in your area, speeds tend to fluctuate. We'll need a more broad test range. Please run a few during the day as well. I'm curious, are you guys using a VPN? Looking forward to your reply.

I've tried videoconferencing and it doesn't work, lag time is too long. Whenever I have a VC scheduled I switch to my hotspot.

The only speedtest that Hughesnet will recognize is the one that they provide. The websites you list will use outside networks that Hughes has no control over.

Heck, those aren't bad for peak time even on Ultra plan. I'm still curious about the conferencing and what video quality it is streaming. Video conferencing may be bad because of the latency not the speed.

I know this, this is because they want to make sure you get 100% the best results.  However you don't think it is biased that the speed test server is in the same building as the provider. It will always show a much better speed.  The internet is not in one building or in one location it is all over the world.  The only true way to tell what you are getting is to hit multiple spots and average them out.

We also recognize www.testmy.net as an accurate means in testing Satellite Internet. If you would also like to run tests using this website, please make sure to use 12 MB as the test size and post your results. Any other suggestions are not optimal.

The internet provider is only responsible for speeds on their own network.  So it's pointless to see what you get going through god knows how many other networks.

It is also pointless to have a GB network for one user if the other pipe going out to the internet is only a 100 MB network.  The only true way to measure actual internet speed is to leave the building in which is providing said internet.

Video Conferencing is not very good with satellite due to the latency.  It is like when on a news broadcast via satellite the reporter ask a question and there is a time laps before the answer.  This is known as Satellite Lag for lack of anything better.  With Satellites in the Clark Belt 22,300 miles away it takes time.  the Laws of Physics cannot be changed it is the only constant in the universe.  I have Satellite TV as well as antenna and the Satellite TV is behind by about 5 seconds from the antenna.  There isn't anything that can be done it is science.
