Sudden spike in data overage unexplained

I've had Hughesnet since July 2015 and average between 100-200 mbs per day, well under the 10,000 mbs per month that I pay for. So I was dismayed to discover that only 2 weeks into a new billing cycle, my data was all used up! I had to fork over $32 to get enough to limp through the next two weeks. I checked my usage history and see that in one day last week the entire month allotment was used!!!  Only the hubs and I use internet, we have one iMac computer, 2 iphones, never stream video or audio. I am stumped. Nothing downloads automatically. I tried chatting with a Hughesnet rep yesterday but the connection was sooooo sloooowwww (imagine that) and English wasn't her primary language. I gave up after an hour. Help! How can determine what ate my usage?

There was a big upload episode in that spike, something was doing a lot of talking.
Hard to tell after the fact. If it was a Windows computer I would say install Glasswire but with a Mac all I can suggest it to look at your Activity Monitor for that date.

The same thing happened to me several months ago and HughesNet techs tried several times to "fix it".  However, it turned out to be something within my computer itself causing the problem and once that was taken care of the problem was solved.  Sorry, but since I am not a technology expert I have no clue what was repaired - just know this one didn't originate with HughesNet.

Could be some kind of cloud backup/syncing doing the large upload/download at exactly the same time like that. Do you leave the computer and phones connected to the internet all the time?

When I have spikes in data usage, it's usually Windows downloading one of their updates.

What's an activity monitor and where do I find it please? Thanks!

Yes, they are always connected. This is the only time in 18 months of usage that I've ever had this kind of spike.

Thanks, I have an iMac so don't use Windows.

Don't think upload would be that high but who knows with Apple stuff. They are know for doing things in the background the user is not aware of similar to Windows.

How to use the Activity Monitor on your Mac:

I would think you would want to concentrate on the "Networking" area,

Thanks. I found it; however it is updated every 5 secs and doesn't seem to have a way to check what happened a week ago.

I don't have a Mac so ....

Tomorrow I'll check the status of the Mac version of Glasswire that is supposed to be in development as well as searching for an alternative.
