Any time a device is powered on that has access to your home network, it is capable of consuming data regardless of whether you are actively using it or not unless it's in a sleep state (with no auto wake settings up enabled) or full hibernation state - you don't even have to be logged into the operating system with username and password for that to occur. For example, under Windows (maybe others) it requires knowing the subtle differences between being logged off, sleeping and hibernating and how power is configured. sleep can sometimes be a tricky one since there are some events that can cause the operating system to awaken dependent on configuration - a a real life example, the dog pictured at left has been known to awaken my computer from its sleep with a simple brush of his tail on the mouse or keyboard (he's taller than most). Although not related to your specific question about the iPhone, together with an acquaintance of mine who occasionally stops by, we were able to root out an Android solution - tagging the Wifi connection as a mobile hot spot (the logical equivalent of setting a Wifi connection as metered on Windows 8/10). Our only logical conclusion was that mobile devices are intentionally designed to use more data on Wifi connections - after all they're always free and unlimited, aren't they and if not certainly ethernet connections are 😉      We found it on our own but It's described here: http://www.androidcentral.com/how-tag-wifi-access-points-hotspots-your-android-device That article should be changed to end with "or a metered Wifi connection".  Searching for a similar on iPhone using Google or Bing is a mind numbing experience, which has only yielded "switch to Wifi to conserve your cellular data" - gee, ya think and I'm guessing here but swtching to cellular will conserve your Wifi data 😉 I only mention it in case there's someone who's similarly rooted through the iPhone interface to discover what was a well camouflaged Android setting using different terminology than "metered". ... I used to have a 100 ft Cat-5 cable just for that purpose that could often be seen stretching down the hallway, around the corner and down the stairs... before fully going the wireless "mobile workstation" and Surface Pro routes - the old desktop with just the basics and some VMs now sits right next to the modem and router (sits mostly idle since my developer days have long passed now). No need for the big hammer - I've put the 15 pound sledge away. Yesterday that 243 MB was used rather quickly (the reason we were serious) and by the time we were through yesterday you'd burned through over 1GB. Total for today is in the 300 MB range - and 175 MB of that was Windows Update. The HughesNet subscribers here can tell you how best to optimize, strategize, and stretch data for your particular plan. The hosts represent all of the servers (web sites) your applications are talking to - the cryptic numeric ones are those that Glasswire can't resolve to a "user friendly" name. FWIW, I do see at least one ad related site there - you may want to install and ad blocker to save even more data. Can't make a recommendation for Chrome however, i don't use it. ... View more

First guess is that it's abut 175 MB attributable to Windows Updates and just about the same as what's waiting for me to manually download with Windows Update. October's cumulative updates started rolling out yesterday. Since you previously indicated you were using Windows 7, go into Windows Update and change the settings to:      This will allow you to control when they are downloaded in the future. For example on my provider, I do that during the free zone or when feeling flush with data. The strategy may differ with HughesNet. Windows update will also display a history of installed updates - they may have not yet installed but would do so on rebooting and show up then with today's date. ... View more

Cathy, Nothing looks to be out of the ordinary with the screen capture posted about 9:50 AM Eastern time. Windows Explorer will continue to show on the Glasswire Firewall tab due to it's prior internet usage. Google Chrome usage looks normal for a browser (even this page itself uses up to 3.2 MB depending on what's been cached in your browser). So the numbers don't appear alarming yet. Windows Update data usage is tallied under the Host Process for Windows Services and yes Patch Tuesday started yesterday with the new Cumulative Update strategy for Windows 7. I'd recommend clicking on Apps next to the shaded All in the upper left just under the tabs - this will give you a view by Application and then you can select an application which further narrows down or filters the right hand side by a specific application - allowing you to better observe applications one by one. Remember to select All Apps from the left side to see all activity. Everything looks good so far, so you can quit drinking now... I'll let the others make suggestions on how to tame Windows Updates on Windows 7 and the strategy needed since I'm not really familiar with the HughesNet plan specifics, as well as some likely unwanted usage occurring with Chrome since I use Firefox.    P.S. Keep an eye on the GB being consumed by Windows Explorer in the right hand Glasswire pane at the top of the Apps section as shown above, to see if it continues climbing. If MalwareBytes was successful, it should stop increasing and flat line at 1.2 GB - if it continues to climb, we're gonna need a bigger hammer.  ... View more

The Glasswire alerts are actually a good sign and sometimes useful. Eventually they will subside - I suspect many are detecting new versions of programs (actually the older versions before infection). Glasswire wasn't able to block Windows Explorer due to McAfee. You'd need to use McAfee to block Windows Explorer in this case. McAfee isn't all that bad but requires ensuring that the latest Virus definitions are downloaded - each antivirus has its own idiosyncrasies to be coped with.    ... View more

FWIW, There's a known issue with Glasswire and McAfee discussed in the Glasswire forum - something about Glasswire detecting the McAfee firewall and not being able to enable Glasswire's as a second firewall - I really didn't read through all of the posts on it. That is a lot and wouldn't be surprised to find the were all being downloaded via Windows Explorer at this point. Yes, that's what GWalk is looking for and I only jump in because you need to act quickly. The culprit appears to be Windows Explorer... do you happen to have a OneDrive, SkyDrive, online backup program, etc. that is synchronizing with the cloud and integrated with Windows Explorer? Cathy, The unplugging of the LAN was simply meant to determine whether usage was disappearing while unplugged which would indicate a HughesNet issue. You're in good hands with Gwalk and he's methodically stepping through to make the determination now that first possibility has been eliminated.
