I seriously thought about signing up to the HughesNet Voice when I upgraded to Gen 5, but the inability to get a ''local'' number whether  by porting my existing AT&T land line number or even getting a new number as long as it has  our same area code (and ideally prefix_ made me decide against it.  We stlll want to be able to give out a ''local'' number to friends and neighbors.  We do know people on our road who only have local calling on their home phone (i.e. don't have long distance service activated on their home phones)   and arev using calling cards for their LD calls.   It does not seem neighborly to have them having to use their Long Distance calling card to call us a mile down the road.

 

Will HughesNet Voice be able to offer ''local'' numbers in the future?

    I understand that Hughesnet can't make guarantees regarding whether or not your current number can be ported, so before I committed, I placed a call to at&t - they provide my home phone landline service.  They did some checking and confirmed that my number can be ported.  Hope that helps you in your decision making process.
