Really want the service canceled? Send a certified letter stating your wish to cancel (or if your state laws allow, record your telephone conversation that includes your request to cancel)and then contact your financial institution to block all future charges. You may still be on the hook for cancellation charges if you are still under contract, but you will have full control over any money that is payed out. Nothing makes a company more willing to talk than not having access to your money.

Because, as the FIRST sentence in my FIRST post states, I am not looking for support. I am limping through the last few days until I no longer require Hughes' services. I have no desire to be told that it is the weather, or that I need to pay a technician to re-align my dish.

Not looking for tech support, just an informational post. I've seen tons of posts lately about poor performance of the network. You are not alone. For 3 weeks now I have also been having issues. It started with a complete outage of service with an error stating that there was no upload link. When service was restored, I was getting latency that spiked into the 7+ second range, and numerous speed tests from 3rd party sites showed that I was getting an upload speed of 0.1mbps. Finally got around to running Hughes' test today and while the numbers were better, still far from where they should be. Test #1 - 29.782 Down, 0.291 Up Test #2 - 29.706 Down, 0.379 Up Test #3 - 30.019 Down, 0.47s Up Download speeds were well above the package I have, but uploads would start fine then hang at 60-80% (on a 1MB file). I believe these hang-ups are responsible for my extremely high latency, and most likely others as well.

Anything that requires any kind of reaction time is not gonna be an enjoyable experience. Lowest latency I have ever seen was around .6 seconds. For any FPS that is an eternity, and you're dead before you even realize you are being attacked. During peak hours, I regularly see latency of anywhere from 1.2 sec to 6.6 seconds, which is completely unplayable. On days you can manage to get a good connection, it can be passible for MMO's, as long as you don't intend to group or raid. More than 3 or 4 people in a group causes tons of lag.

Well, this past week with Hughes has only intensified my impatience to get rid of them. Started with a "Failure to transmit" error that lasted several hours and since my system came back up, I have been getting horrible connections. Running speed tests revealed that my upload speeds are almost non existent. Always less than 0.1mbps. And let's not forget that the real time monitor in a game I play is frequently showing 20-40% packet loss. Tick tock Hughes... less than a month to go.

I agree that there may ocassionally be issues with any kind of internet service, but I would be willing to bet a large sum of money that it will be fewer than I have had with a sattelitte connection. The local telephone company that I will be using has a great reputation and in the 3 interactions I have had with them so far have all been great with knowledgable people and quick to respond to any questions. Any one of the benefits listed in my original post would make the switch worth it, and getting them all makes it a no brainer.

I finally recieved a call today that I have been waiting on for months. Fiber optic construction in my area is nearing completion and hookups are going to begin in 60 days, thanks to NY's initiative to expand true broadband to 100% of its population by the end of 2018. I will finally be able use the internet the way most of the country already does. No data limits, no insane amounts of latency, no sitting through a storm without access to the internet, and no more playing videos at the lowest possible resolution to avoid buffering. And all this for the same price I am currently paying. I am so looking forward to the day I get to call and cancel.
