How does the users online avatar appearing work?

Notice the users online info, bottom right corner main page, shows many more in number than avatars showing. Does it have to do with the logon time out thingy?

    Basically it shows a number for each unique visitor, some of those would be search crawlers like googles search bot.  It then takes a few of the most recent posters accounts and displays them I think upto 6 or so and shows most recent first and moves down the line.
