I guess as a Gen 4 person my expectations are lower. Generally get around 10 Mbps and higher during peak time and up to +30 Mbps during off peak. WIfe and I can do what we want downloading a file, streaming is still pretty snappy. Suppose 40+ Mbps would be nice but I'm not that impatient when downloading. Can see where that speed would definitely be a positive for a family of 3-4 plus all online at the same time doing YouTube, Facebook, even lower def Netflix.

Echostar 17 is now considered a Gen 5 satellite just like Echostar 19. To be honest with the recent problems with some beams on E19, you may bebetter off staying on E17, at least for the near term. Also, some places are served by both satellites, hopefully they are trying to balance the load between the two. So maybe they determined it was best to keep you on the older satellite. All that is required for Gen 5 service is the new modem/router combo (HT2000W).

Nerd that I am spent the evening watching episodes of The Expanse. I'm sure the "nailbiter" will be discussed and video replayed ad nauseam for at least the next few days on all media sites and channels. Doubt I'll miss what happened.

To be honest that should be the case with all sites. I routinely monitor background use although I do tend to be one who focuses a lot on such things. I've had other sites do the same here and there throughout my years on the Internet. I've always closed the page, gone back, and it magically has stopped using the data.

Personally haven't experienced that but hey, sure it is possible especially if some kind of background video is loading or even if something on the page is stuck in a loop. In the end, the Internet is based on data going back and forth constantly, a relatively small glitch can cause lots of data use. I still rely on my Networx throughput meter a lot and watch it regularly. One of my favaorite real time indicators for what is going on.

I won't watch it anyway, yea I'm un-American, but can't help but notice how the play date keeps getting pushed further and further into the new year. When I was younger and actually interested in such things it was played around the middle of January. In another 50 years it may be played a week before the new season starts...lol. I actually remember the first one back in '67, it was a really a big deal. Of course not as big as the media machine churns things up these days. I get 24 chanels OTA and 80 miles from towers although elevated in mountains. Have one of these antennas with an amplifier at the antenna then a distribution amp. Granted towers are in one location. Others may need a rotator.

Congrats! Anyone who says they wouldn't trade satellite internet for high speed cable isn't being honest. The lower latency alone is like having double the speed. I see it when I use my 4g LTE hot spot.

Go to that folder and delete the "status-meter.conf" file then restart the meter. PS: You may need to enable show hidden files/folders to find it.

If you can't stream at those speeds then you have another issue going on. The advertised speed is "up to" 25 Mbps so you are way above that. Both those speeds are way above the norm and may not be accurate. What test are you using to measure speed?

You can easily use that much data if streaming in HD. I'm not familiar with Fire Stick but hopefully it has a setting to stream at 360p or lower.

First question has to be what definition is it streaming? You can turn off/pause Video Saving Mode and see how it works. Only thing is if streaming 480p and above, you'll eat through data quickly.

Hi Ricky, both Echostar satellites are now considered Gen 5 satellites including the older one. Frankly, with the problems some of the beams on the newer satellite have been having, your friend is probably better off staying on the older one.

Highly doubt you can get anything in writing, even an email. Only advice I have is get the sales agent name and if you feel they messed you over then one of the mods here can have the call reviewed. Only problem is I'm not sure they keep the calls longer than about 6 months, maybe a year max. So, if you come back in a year to complain there may be no call recording to review. I suppose you could detail everything here if you do go for it. At least that is a record of some kind. The post should be here indefinitely.

NOR gateway on Gen 4 is fine, believe J2 beams also go through it. Actually hope it is gateway problems, not the satellite, much easier to fix something on the ground side.

Snow.........yuck! Why we moved further south although also in the deep freeze right now. At least no snow or ice, knock on wood. Hard packed snow on rural dirt/gravel roads is the worst. No thanks, nice you're enjoying it though.
