Thanks folks! Owe it to Alan (Thompson) who recommended me and I felt I should give it a go. Nowhere near Gwalk with his great diagrams with explanations and a few others who have hands on HughesNet installation background. Hopefully I can continue to help new customers understand better how the system works and get the most from it. Amanda, me patient? Think I'll work on that. 🙂

wpersal, Been a 10+ year customer, satisfied overall. The dish, modem, radio, cable and installer labor are not cheap, it does cost them quite a bit. DirecTV, DISH, Comcast, TWC, AT&T have contracts, heck all providers have contracts these days. This service is for those who can't get cable, WISP, low cost 4G........any other decent option. If you have other options you should not go with satellite. Need help? Please start a new post. You are replying to a solved problem 2 months old.

Also depends what those games and other programs do in the background. If you want to be totally safe, turn off WiFi and/or unplug the cable from the modem or the cable going to the modem from the router if you have one. Could also turn off the router. Bottom line, break the connection to the modem.

I have not heard of any satisfied customers. Well, people don't normally post satisfaction with a service on the internet, but they sure will post dissatisfaction. Not going see much praise at all percentage wise. I've been satisfied overall for 10+ years now. Leigh, if you have problems with your service you should start a new topic and ask for help.

Depends, remote access through Windows is different from remote access through the router. I believe they do it through the OS but have never dealt with them. Maybe someone else will have the exact answer. Pretty sure it is through the OS though because you'd know if you went into the router and enabled it. Besides, they only need access to your computer, not the whole network. I would make sure remote access on your computer is turned off now along with the router.

Cuddlebug, it is available here and affects the eight router models listed: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/29959 You can go into your router web management interface by typing its IP address into your browser search bar and hitting enter. There will be able to see what version of firmware you have. If you don't have remote access enabled on your router then the only way someone could hack into it is if they had access to it on your internal network. Many people enable remote access for various reasons and they are the ones who are really vulnerable.

Pretty sure I've never allowed it. There are those that do it though so they can access their home network remotely. I wouldn't do it, not worth the risk.

And my philosophy has always been to research something thoroughly before entering into a contract. Back when I first signed up with HughesNet I knew exactly what I was getting because I went to my local library and used the internet there to research it.

Don't even have to enter any information but will be more accurate if you do. https://www.cableone.net/pages/datacalculator.html Notice with Normal it shows only 4 hours of HD video streaming a month and equals 11.732 GB of data per month.

Lisa J, there is latency on cable, just much lower than satellite. We're also willing to pay the price for secluded rural living. New house going up in fact, notice the trees, that way for at least half mile in every direction. National forest on three sides actually. Happy, happy. 🙂

I agree with Bill and the calls should be routed to knowledgeable people right here in the good old US. But, two months? Come on! I would have found a way to get someone to install it if I wanted/needed it a long time before 2 months went by. Sorry but can't help but doubt the truthfulness of the post.
