People are so sensitized to phishing emails, though, that they may think the email is dodgy. An announcement on a web page seems to carry more weight, imo.

Looks like this company offers what you need, so you'll be jumping ship to join them soon, I expect. Are you not with them because they don't offer service in your area? All plans have No Hard Data Limits. If you exceed the amount of data in your plan, Hughesnet won't cut you off or charge you more. Stay connected at reduced speeds, typically 1-3 Mbps. This is actually very cool. I remember when being in FAP meant dialup looked fast, and that mocking orange button. 🙂

@GabeU, It's definitely an ethical dilemma -- you want to help, but how much do you actually intrude? They have beliefs, and intruding too much would attack those beliefs, and then you would be out of their sphere and unable to help at all. I don't envy the position your mother was in.

Go to the company's support forums. Simply search Google for the company's name and the words support forums. There are complaints as old as 48 hours, and someone actually was complaining about the unlimited plan. I'm not going to post the links here, sorry, but the main link to the support forums is community.nameofcompany.com. The company recently changed its name, by the way.

Recently another ISP began offering unlimited data -- the result has been disastrous, and speeds have taken a huge tumble for everyone, even users who do not subscribe to the unlimited data package. In fact, the company appears to be throttling speeds on purpose, just to allow for all that "unlimited" data. Users are furious and are venting on the company's forums. (I have found it very illuminating to read the support forums for a couple of other ISPs; there's a lot of perspective to be gained). In any case, while there's "unlimited" data, people can't really use it, as the speed is laughable.

Isn't all of this (the desire for a simple way of life) a romantic view, though? The realities of such a life are probably quite harsh and society as a whole seems to want to get as far from that as possible: no indoor plumbing, having to go crack ice at 4 am to get water, having to go fetch wood, having to feed the animals, plant the fields, harvest the fields (unless some blight has been visited upon the fields and now there will be little to no food for the winter), etc. Can we not live in simpler ways within our comfort?

Speaking of streaming, I'm able to stream Netflix when the speed is slow -- but that's it; I can't stream from Amazon or from CBS or NBC. Haven't tried Hulu. YouTube's quality is very bad with slow speeds.

Nah, something's wrong, it can't be that high. I then got the same result, over and over. I was VERY happy. LOL. Then it kicked up to 30Mbps about six months later. " The satellite really likes you, Gabe. I've never experienced consistent speeds, and of late they've been very slow, sometimes so slow they've affected browsing. It'll get better, though, I'm sure of it.

"I'm fine with 10 mbps speed, anything above that is gravy to me." I'm fine with whatever speeds work for what I need. I don't need huge speeds, though they help when downloading big files. Streaming works fine for me with speeds around 7 Mbps. Simple browsing works at lower speeds, but I do more than just simple browsing. I had pretty good speeds yesterday --today we're back to low speeds, 1.5 Mbps and less. I agree satellite internet is awesome and amazing.

Yes, BirdDog is getting too much fast data. Unfair! LOL I've only had moderate speeds since the beginning (17 to 20 Mbps average), and now the speed is slower in general. I did have a period with higher speeds during the day, sometimes higher than 40 Mbps, but that's no longer the case. I have some issues with Youtube and Netflix if the speed goes under 6 Mbps. I also have noticed that https pages are once again loading very slowly (they hadn't there for a while). The upside is the company's responsive, more than others from what I've seen in my lurkings. They're working on this, it'll take time, but things will improve.

I agree; a company is there to make a profit; but good companies also seek to provide good customer service -- bad customer service in the end cuts into profits. As for sales call, there's a bit of a con involved in sales, so it's up the customer to be educated as much as possible and not expect a lot of straightforwardness from a salesperson. The sales calls are not 100% private, since they get recorded and have been posted in the past. I wonder if there is some kind of a script and whether some salespeople go off it.
