. And, again, the vast majority of that is due to streaming. Plus, there is a lot of 4k streaming now, which stresses the system even more. I quickly learned that streaming would quicky use up all of my data. Back in those days, data usage was by the day and they would throttle you down to dial up speeds when exceeded, which made it impossible to stream. Now the throttling isn't so bad. Can one still stream after being throttled? If so, we're back to my theory that data caps are more about money than anything else. HISTORY, n. An account mostly false, of events mostly unimportant,

Why are there data limits? At first glance, data limits seem to make sense. at least for satellite systems, due to the high cost of putting a satellite in orbit, etc. OTOH I suspect that no one has ever been been turned down when trying to purchase more data. "Sorry, we can't sell you more data. our satellite is fresh out". Or, is that why one sees so many people here having speed problems with Hughes? Is someone who's sharing the same satellite resources constantly streaming movies? Unfortunately This practice has also spread to cable internet suppliers. Where it absolutely makes no sense at all. I've read that at one time cable isps spent about 20 percent of their revenue on basic infrastructure. Now, the cost of routers, switching equipment and other related gear has declined so much that a typical companys infrastructure costs are now only around 1.5 percent. Why is it just now that some companies are implementing data limits? Is it because of movie streamers like netflix and hulu? Since some of these same companys have cable tv assets. are they trying to discourage cord cutting? Is anybody out there running Linux? I get the feeling that most of the people around here are WIMPs ( windows icon mouse pushers ). I used to be a ClUB ( command line user bigot ), but now I'm just LIMP ( Linux icon mouse pusher ). :<)> Shortly after MS pulled the plug on XP, I switched to Linux Mint and fell in love with it. It's free, comes with a ton of free software. You don't need a anti-virus program, a registry cleaner, a defragger, or any of that other junk that seems to be necessary to keep Windoze from either crashing or slowing down to a crawl. Plus, there's a huge Linux community on the net. On those very rare occasions where I've had a problem, I've always found help, many times with a bash script I could copy and paste into a terminal to fix it.

Very efficient of you! LOL I've also figured out that it's also my computers ipv6 address. The Linux terminal window defaults to a small size As soon as I made the window full size I could see the whole address I should have made the subject of this post "nevermind, I'm stupid".

I'm still plugging away at my data usage problem. I'm now using a glasswire like Linux utility called iftop. Most addresses I'm seeing look like normal ip addresses For example: The biggest data user is 192.168.42.103, which I suspect is the Hughes modem But, I keep seeing this in the address field, with different descripters: 2001:5b0:2a62:5e8:97f:ca2 Anyone know what this is? Doesn't even look like a normal ip address to me. I probably should be asking this question on a Linux forum, but I thought I'd give it a try here first.

He talked me through some config changes to the modem that solved all of my problems. Did he have me change my beamid? I don't remember. Anyway I' still looking for some info on all this stuff.

I never cease to be amazed by people having such radically different experiences with Gen5. I'm in 32680 ( about as far from you as possible ). I'm running on the same dish I had with Gen4. I'm getting speeds of over 28. With a signal strength in the high 90's.

Am I the squeaky wheel? Lord knows I've squeaked enough about Gen5's data usage around here. Now, out of the blue, the problem seems to be getting better. I've gone from 5 to 7 percent a day data usage to 2 to 3 percent a day. So far, it looks like I'm going to make it through this month without getting throttled. This would be the first time since Gen5. I haven't done anything different that I can think of. I've basically done the same things every day for years. That's why the data usage difference was so obvious when I "upgraded" to Gen5 in the first place. BTW I'm running Linux mint 18.3. All updates are set for 3:00 am Sunday morning. My browser is Firefox 59.9.2 with a popup blocker, a Java script blocker, and an ad blocker running. ( Anything to save data.) Been running Linux since MS pulled the plug on Windows XP. Has Hughes changed their data metering software on my modem? How could one ever know? I do know that Comcast has been accused of fudging their data metering. Which brings me to the next question: Why are there data limits? Answer: Follow the money. Some of you may have read my earlier post on how unhappy I am with Gen5 data losses. I'm now looking for another provider. It seems the only choice out here where I live ( in the woods ) is Viasat. So I go to their website, and the first thing they want to know is my zip code. What possible difference could my location make? It certainly doesn't matter to the satellite where its signal ends up! Then it hit me. They want to know the other choices I have, and the competion they face, so they can design their plans and pricing for maximum profit. This may also help explain why some people are not getting the data problems with Gen5 that I am. Every time my modem reboots it downloads software from the satellite. Is this sofware customized for my location? I beginning to suspect that this is so. The bottom line is that I could upgrade Hughes to more data for about the same price as changing to Viasat ( What a coincidence! ). So, I guess I'll stay with Hughes for a while. Even though I hate getting ripped of like this. I'm coping right now by doing most of my browsing during the bonus period. Otherwise I'd run out of data half wy through every month. This NEVER happened with Gen4
