Chromecast can be a real problem if you haven't taken steps to reduce its background use especially with Backdrop images. The new Home update has a "low bandwidth" setting which helps and also turn off the other feeds like news that are defaulted to on. Even then, if you have the Chromecast powered with the supplied adapter it will use data 24/7 using WiFi which really adds up at a low trickle rate. Should power it through a TV USB port that turns off when the TV is off or you manually remove power when not in use.

I get around 26 channels in the mountains where I live with furthest towers being about 80 mile away. Of course other than the major broadcast stations the rest are things like Comet, MeTV, LAF and religious. From what I've been reading, the signal is actually supposed to be better and reach further with ATSC 3.0. Guess we'll see. Oh, my hypocrisy is showing by the "I personally" phrase in original post. I should be irked at myself.

Thought this would be of interest to any of those who primarily use OTA for their television viewing: https://www.digitaltrends.com/home-theater/atsc-3-0-ota-broadcast-standard-4k-dolby-atmos/ I had no idea this was even in the works. At least it sounds like one new converter/tuner will be able to serve all TVs in the house, hasn't been that long since I upgraded to the digital flat screens. If like things in the past though it could be several years off before significant country wide implementation since they're just talking about it now. I personally could care less about 4k definition on a screen smaller than my entire wall, lol.

So, there are common sayings that have two ways of wording them that rub me the wrong way when I hear the expression worded a particular way. Two cases: 1. Standing "online" instead of "inline". Most everywhere I've been there is no line painted on the floor to stand "on" and I'm certainly not standing on top of anyone. Instead, I am standing "in" a line of people. 2. A "bald" faced lie instead of "bold" faced. How does someone have a bald face when it comes to their intention, shave it? Instead I was taught bold face, as a person is being pretty bold to lie to your face. Yea, I'm being a bit grammar eccentric but makes me cringe a bit when I hear them. Anyone have others? And happy voting day! Sure glad the political ads will be over although they'll probably start up with the 2020 ones before we get a real rest from it.

Not talking about modem being a VPN server, talking about a computer running as VPN client like you are asking about. Most likely will not work or be very spotty on when it does. Can disable Web Acceleration on the modem to possibly help but still no guarantee it will.

VPN is not recommended nor supported by HughesNet. Streaming video at the greatly reduced speed caused by VPN will most likely make it unviewable. This from the Help/FAQs section:

Comet TV (OTA) plays a lot of the SG series. Even though I'm a sci-fi junkie can still only watch the same episodes so many times. Sure wish one of the broadcast stations would come out with a good new sci-fi series but afraid those days may be gone.

@udanwudeligv My DVD player also acts as a media player and has Netflix, Hulu and other streaming site capabilities built in. If yours has the same features and is connecting to the Internet it may be doing something in the background you're not aware of.

Satellite TV is one-way communication. The signals are beamed down to earth constantly for everyone to receive at any time, much like broadcast OTA TV. Satellite Internet is two-way communication specific to each user requiring much more data and satellite time per subscriber. The difference is huge. Do some research, it isn't mixing apples and oranges, it is mixing apples and potatoes.
