I may have exaggerated a tad especially about dish size but pretty certain it would take beefier equipment on the user side from what we all have. Again, may not be worth the investment in a higher power radio and bigger dish, plus what it would then cost the customer. Maybe a mod will eventually weigh in.

Would most likely take a huge dish like the old 6-12 foot diameter days just for the receive side, then the transmit side would most likely need to be quite a bit more than the 1-2 watt used now. Probably would not be cost friendly at all for those who might want it. I was a bit shocked when I saw some of the beam charts before Echo 19 launched showing one Alaska beam.

If I'm reading correctly you say you have tokens, why not use those? And no, you don't just pay by the hour for data, you pay for data amount. Again, that is what tokens are for if you want normal speed back after going over normal plan allowance.

Best wishes in your search for another provider. Most satellite Internet users have no viable alternative that is why we learn to do the best we can with what it is. As far as the buffering thing, there is PlayOn Cloud which works well. There is a small fee for recordings and means you must decide what you want to watch before hand then record and download it. I have several Nest cameras and they work fine on HughesNet. They are cloud based so no static IP is needed. However, like Mark says, they can use a lot of data under certain situations: 1. If left on all the time (24/7) they will use a lot of data, especially if placed where there is normally people/pets moving around in view of the camera, as the video is being uploaded to the cloud. Stream data amount to the cloud reduces drastically if view is static. 2. Capturing the video to the cloud is one way but if you then also watch the video using HughesNet you are using twice the amount of data. One time going to the cloud server then again going back to you watching. If you are watching remotely, say from a cell phone, then you use the data from the cell plan by watching and only use the Hughes data for what is going up to the cloud server for you to watch. 3. There is a low and high definition setting for the cameras and I leave mine set to low unless there is something I really need to see in high definition. 4. I do not leave my cameras on 24/7 to avoid constant stream to the cloud. I normally only turn them on remotely while away when I want to check, then turn them right back off. Hope this helps.

Chromecast unless the default settings are changed and is not powered on except when being used. EDIT: One of the biggest, kids with any device connected to the Internet. Sorry parents but just a fact.

Local casting should not consume any of your HughesNet data if you've already downloaded the video. The data was used when downloaded, then you are only using your local network to cast the video from one device to the other.

Cloud based cameras work fine like my Nest ones. One basic fact no matter what cameras, on any plan with limited data you are going to eat a lot of it viewing video remotely if doing it for long periods. And no, residential plans do not have static IP addresses. Something easily researched about satellite Internet.

"Good old days"? Lol, online experience was more like using a teletype machine and high end graphics was a game of pong. Some things are nostalgic but not necessarily good, I like advancement. Even if I had an old machine setting in front of me right now I think I'd get bored with it pretty quickly. Even I'm getting up there in years now I like a challenge and learning new things. Measured in kilobytes? No thanks!

I'm old and remember those but still just looks like a bunch of scribbling and I don't want to take the time to look them up. That is why actual graphic emojis where invented. Your question would most likely take forwarding to the website developers (third party). If you really want an answer probably should post in "Your Thoughts on the Community" or "Tech Support". The mods don't consider the General section as a place they are compelled to answer or take part in.

Sadly, even a business plan can't improve the inherent latency over satellite. From the sounds of that second link I posted VipKid is not going to work unless someone else posts here saying they did. No way possible to get even close to 100ms ping.

No idea if it will help but try turning off both Web Acceleration and the Video Data Saver. If that doesn't work then one of the mods will probably have to jump in. EDIT: Noticed on their site that it requires an HD camera and steady 20Mbps speed so the requirements are pretty steep. https://t.vipkid.com.cn/tech-reqs EDIT 2: This site says a ping/latency of 100ms or less is needed which is a killer with satellite which is 600ms and higher. https://www.myvipkidjourney.com/vipkid-internet-requirements/

Also, most of the time someone is having an issue it isn't being caused by the modem, though when it is they can easily replace it. 🙂 Can you imagine tech support and the overseas call centers having to deal with third party modems? I'm shuddering right now just thinking about it.

I dunno but here is a good test with lots of locations to select: http://www.azurespeed.com/ Latency will always be significantly higher than ground based Internet with lowest possible real world of around 600-650ms.
