There is only one wired ISP covering the whole county and along the loop run/road I live on there are only a limited number of houses so not too much incentive for them. I’m guessing without the federal grant money, there would be very little if any cost justification for the fiber installation given the number of customers they can service. The copper pairs are maxed out and I can’t get any wired service until the fiber is up, hence the Hughesnet service. I initially started with Viasat and their service was very poor here. Hughes is only slight better but the only option right now. Verizon has approval (2 years ago) for a tower nearby but no construction has started yet. That could be another ISP option down the road.

Hope you see the work completed soon. Its great that the federal gov't provides money to local providers to install/upgrade substandard service but the limited profit potential from rural service due to the low density of customers and any competition kind of eliminates any incentive to providers to work fast.

I can relate. My date for service has changed at least 4 time over the past 2 years but I'm getting more hopeful. There have been sections up my street on the utility poles where the fiber cable has been installed and the ground/road has been marked where the buried runs are. The section from my house to the street is up on utility poles so maybe easier to get connected once service is started. Right now I've been given a November date which I don't believe but maybe.

Thanks for the detailed info GabeU. In my current case there are no options for cell or wired service right now but that should improve over the next 6-12 months with the local service provider having received federal grants for fiber service in my area. I do understand it is the technology limitations and I'm guessing there are a lot of Hughsnet customers around me causing evening service to really slow to almost unusable speeds. It appears that business service does prioritize daytime performance but with the bonus and anytime data limits, it is of limited benefit for sustained access. I've also looked into StarLink but I do not have enough open sky to make that work. For now this will suffice. Thanks.

I currently have the business75 plan. It’s very slow but ok for basic website access but evening video streaming is pretty much unusable with frequent buffering and freezes. I wanted to look into the possibility that residential service would be ok for daytime web access with improved video streaming in the evening. What is involved in changing to residential and what are the differences I would see in service. I’m currently working from home during the day requiring website access to secure sites and , uploading/downloading of files. I'm anticipating local fiber service within the next year so I won’t signup for any long term service contract.

Liz I’m confused about where these state codes are displayed. I don’t see them anywhere in the Hughesnet mobile iOS app. If I go to the self diagnostic tool option and run the test, it always reports “attention needed” but I’m guessing that’s because I have the Hughes modem WiFi radios turned off. I run my own router and WiFi access points. More info about how to obtain these state codes would be helpful. Bruce.

Yea, I did some more evaluating and it is not every time I open the app and it doesn’t appear to be any obvious problems with performance so it’s most likely just a glitch in the app.

So most times I open the app, it reports some undefined problem, asks if I want to fix it then tell me attention needed and to call for assistance. I did call once when I was having other issues so nothing was determined. Any idea what’s going on? Anything I can to to figure it out? Thanks, Bruce.

Great suggestion. I signed up with PlayOn Cloud for a trial service and found it to be a very good solution that gives me unbuffered HD video and by downloading the cloud files at work, saves my data as well. I set up the app on my phone, que’d all my recording to the cloud, downloaded and set up the Playin Cloud Downloader on my work PC and set it up to automatically download to my PC between 12am and 5am so as not to interrupt any business hours. Then I bring my external USB HDD to work and transfer all the downloads to play at home thru the USB on the TV. With this service all you pay is the cost of each download which if you buy their larger packages will only cost 13-20 cents per. Even if I can’t get the downloads from work, you can set up downloads to home overnight and they would be available the next morning. The only downside is you have to plan ahead a few hours or overnight before watching a stream. Thanks GabeU.

That great this worked for you and maybe it will be a solution for some others. I’m actually running in this configuration and unfortunately didn’t improve anything but it does give me better control of my wired and wireless network. I run wired to my TV where I was streaming video.

I’ve seen that discussed here and started to look into so options for using the PC based software version. I am considering setting up a home network PC based server that possibly could be used as the recording device and then fed to my Smart TV thru an Ethernet connection. I haven’t figured out if this could be a viable option but any recommendations from the experts here would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the detailed explanations guys.....that really help me understand what’s going on. When I had ViaSat service I was experiencing buffering because of speed issues (less than .25 down in the evenings GS) which is what made me change to Hughes. While the Hughes speeds are consistently high, I’m assuming my still slow internet performance is mainly a function of this same latency and network congestion that is affecting the streaming. Unfortunately where I’m located, satellite is my only option for now so I will have to learn to tolerate it. Thanks again.

I know this has been addressed in a variety of previous posts but I haven’t really seen a good explanation. Using Netflix or Amazon Prime in the evenings, the stream stops to buffer every few minutes. My download speeds using Speedtest.net seem to be good so why is there excessive buffering? Is there Hughes network congestion even with good download speed? I have video saver turned off and Netflix video quality at the lowest setting. Is there anything I can do to improve this?
