Maybe it is maintenance that involves swapping out IPGW servers or turbo buffers and the IPGWs available are reduced. Could there be some maintenance or upgrades happening at SDO? What about the other beams that share this gateway, like 64 and 66? If folks on beams 64 and 66 also see something like this maybe this is the result of some maintenance at the gateway?

There is another thread with details. Here is the information: https://support.hughesnet.com/en/faq/account_billing/planchange "The new plans include 50% more data than the previous plans." So it sounds like the 50GB plan becomes the 75GB, and I suppose 30GB becomes 45GB, 20GB becomes 30GB, and 10GB becomes 15GB. The change is happening starting February 1, 2022 and they are sending notices 30 days before, so I think I just received the notice a few days earlier as my plan rolls over sooner than most. I thought it might be just certain beams because I heard of the special NY plan, but it seems to be everyone. I thought I was getting something super-exclusive for a little bit -- heh heh

Based on a discussion in "myAccount and Billing" this is a plan transition for everyone, not just birds with fancy feathers on empty beams. I guess in a few months maybe I will take a gander at the handful of more crowded beams on TestMy to see what the effect has been on them. I guess empty beams will not show any change. Any old professors here with an archive link to the old forum site of those other guys? They dropped that forum a while back, but I remember when they offered a super plan (freedom?) and posts began popping up like mushrooms showing people attempting to download over 1TB with that crazy plan on a satellite with less bandwidth than J2. Any thoughts about the new plans on your beam?

I thought there would be more crowing about this new 75 GB plan as it has me excited. Mr. maratsade seemed interested too, but edited his post to N/C. Was this a super exclusive offering only for birds with proper plumage? I can understand more crowded beams not getting something like this, but aren't there a good number of less busy beams yet? Based on testmy data, it looked to me like there were a fair number of beams without a heavy load as of 18 months ago. Has nobody else received a letter about this?

How many folks plan to move up from the 50 GB plan to the new 75 GB plan? I had not heard of this before, but I will be getting this new plan. Is this plan of limited availability? I heard of a few unusual plans available in certain states, anybody know if this new plan will be widely available, or only available in sparsely populated beams?

Yes, everything is working good. Just having more data for free, although nice, could be a problem if a bunch of folks also had data reset and they were tempted to use it all up in a short period of time. I will watch to see if it happens again, of course. Anybody else see this happen this morning? Thank you!

My month starts on the 2nd for the billing/data reset, but this morning my data reset again as though it is the beginning of the month. I notice that the data reset at 12:30am then briefly reverted at 2am to where it should be then reset again 2:15am. Not sure what to label this as since I think my profile is fine? Could someone check that my account did not get crossed with someone else and that extra billings are not happening to someone? I still have plenty of GB as I do not come close to using my amount up and so do not need a reset to full of my data amount (or want an extra monthly bill 🙂 In checking in, I see by billing period still seems correct in the graph below, and no new unexpected invoices showed up, so I am guessing maybe someone accidentally hit a button and reset my data to full? Although I guess it is nice to get free data, this thing could cause trouble if it gets out of hand 🙂 Thanks! Here is a snap shot of this morning (start time in Eastern Time) Column N shows the unexpected restoring of Anytime data -- Bonus GB reset too, of course. Blacked out columns are just the usage of the top 5 devices from the last 24 hours. I had noticed a few days ago that TestMy was showing an average test score for many towns in my beam that had dropped a lot in the last few weeks, and I thought maybe something was up, since it would take a lot of bad tests to cause the average to drop so much for the towns I was watching. I pulled the list for several towns, and copied it out to a spreadsheet and filtered it down and I am seeing averages for each town much closer to the average numbers that I thought TestMy showed a few week ago. Other areas seems to show averages similar to what they had before, so maybe it is better to not rely on the average they show, and just pull the list out to see if things are still good for the region in general using a spreadsheet. A bit of a pain as it is easy to watch a group of towns by saving a direct link to each page, and takes a couple minutes to copy to a spreadsheet to verify the numbers.... My test scores are still high, but at least the low averages in the towns with my results do not appear to be caused by many low scores showing up recently and it appears rather than being a newly cropped up issue with the beam or gateway, that something changed with the way TestMy calculated the average in these towns. Maybe TestMy excludes scores from the Town/ISP specific average they think are too high, and something happened to exclude a bunch of the better scores for Hughes in my area? Maybe "recent" changed to include everything in history?

Yes, exactly -- but if that process quit working for a bit it might be a problem as on reboot people might begin to accumulate on one IPGW. There may be a similar process with Out Route? Anyway, from his testing, I see a third city show up that is 140 miles from the approximate beam 82 center. With my testmy results, the locations were within 60 miles of beam center 2/3 of the time, and the rest were within 90 miles. Maratsade had a larger distance, but with 140 miles (and that is if he is actually beam 82, so maybe the location data is even worse than this!) then maybe test scores are not just mixed in with J1 beams, but also neighboring J2 beams. Also, I have been running test this afternoon, and they are not above 50Mbps, but looking good in the high 30's to mid 40's, so it is beginning to appear there is nothing to this and that I just had a streak of really high tests for a bit. I also do a regular reboot, the early patches would get squirrelly after a week, but they seem a bit better now, so I try to reboot every two weeks. I don't think I need to worry about rebooting this evening and finding myself in slow-ville. Do you think I should ask the fellow to confirm his beam/IPGW/Out route? I don't want to waste his time with a wild goose chase.

I think maratsade just responding about the smaller tests that were recent, so I was not sure if maybe testmy was backing your size down. If your tests are being automatically backed down to a size smaller than 25MB, then you may need to check the option for 'No Forward' to keep the test size at 25MB. This is an image GabeU posted a bit back for someone else. I am not sure if you are using the automatic testing or not, but you want the 25MB size for the download tests.

Although I don't know much about how this works, it seems that the bandwidth of the beam (at least for download) is divided among the "Out Routes". I noticed that not only has my IPGW not changed since the 11th, neither has my outroute, and I think that normally changes fairly often, like every day or two at some seemingly random time. So maybe something that does the load balancing has stopped working on my beam and people who reboot are getting crowded onto a busy out route, while out route 4 becomes increasingly empty! I was going to reboot my modem last night, but held off when I began to suspect something -- even though my evidence is flimsy at best. I could reboot tonight and see what happens -- but if this wild hypothesis about load balancing is remotely correct and I end up on a crowded out route then I will be very sad 😞 Of course, maybe the fantastic performance I am seeing is just the result of the great crush of traffic from the pandemic being over and I am finally seeing the result of those gateway upgrades they appear to have rolled out earlier this year. Although the speed tests I ran last night in prime time were eye popping, it was Saturday evening, so things are a little different for Saturday. Sunday usually appears to have more activity in the afternoon, so maybe I can retest then to see what happens. We could also ask that fellow with the issue for his beam, IPGW, and out route to see if there is anything even remotely lining up, after all, if he is in Utah then there can not be anything here right? So if we ask the fellow with the issue for beam/IPGW/out route, and he is on my beam with a different out route, and I see crazy high benchmarks consistently over 50Mbps again this afternoon which is usually fairly busy on a Sunday, and if I reboot to find myself in purgatory at 7pm tonight, then maybe there is something to this load balancing idea? If the first two look to be true, I might not have the courage to reboot though.... 🙂 What do you think?

Recently, I have been seeing really good speeds. In fact, I was thinking they were unusually good. Of course, I mostly just watch the latency as it is an unobtrusive way to have an idea of how busy things are without running a testmy -- kind of like guessing at how many people are in the store by tracking your average wait time at a grocery checkout. And things have seemed empty, so I figured I would run a bunch of testmy in prime time which I don't normally do because I don't like the idea of wasting bandwidth when it is most in demand. The results look like they came from 4am -- this beam feels empty, like right after I first was installed in 2017, and again right after that first gateway upgrade in 2017 that doubled the IPGW that were showing up. I had other testmy result recently that were very good, but as they were run in less busy times, I figured it was not that unusual. In looking at TestMy scores for cities that I have a been associated with, I see a bunch of bad scores that have dragged the averages down on the recent tests list. Of course, many of these used the wrong test size but maybe TestMy backed the test size down since they were around 1Mbps? There is a fellow reporting speed issues, and in his early tests, I noticed he was associated with a city at the southern edge of my beam according to SatBeams, but I figured that SatBeams is probably off a bit for the beam placement, and the location data is probably only crudely lining up with the beam, so he could be on a beam to the south. In more recent tests, the location data gave a city at the northern edge of my beam, so unless this location data is crazy off at times, it seems there is a fair chance he is on the same beam as me. Also, I noticed his tests show remarkably consistent speed throughout the test, usually considered to be a sign of low congestion. If he is in my beam, could other people on this beam be seeing the same thing he is? If so, could the high speeds I am seeing be the result of a group of other users on the beam being slowed way down by something? Could the rash of new testmy results with low scores at cities I have been associated with in the past be related? I am showing J2CHY082HNSIGW1204 and have had this since 10/11 with OutRoute 4. I noticed my good speed some days later about the time the fellow posted about his low speed. I have seen in the past cases on this site where users report consistently bad speeds, then something happens and they are restored. Could a gateway server that handles a group of customers on the beam just need a reboot or something? For you long time satellite users that have seen this before, was the resolution something along these lines? On the flip side, have you ever had a period of a week or so where the speed is insanely good? What do you think? Of course, there is a lot of guessing here, but with some communication some light might be shed on what is going on.

It is on this screen under General on the left: If you have Windows, you can watch the Task Manager for fun -- if you see the graph looks like a fork or has drops, it may indicate something else talking on the frequency the WiFi is using. As Mark mentioned, with the VPN on, it is pretty hard be able to leverage caching and compression so VPN with satellite is generally regarded as more punishing to your available bandwidth than for non-satellite. Anyway, that fellow advocated for estimating bandwidth and being more sparing in the use of real bandwidth tests in order to conserve bandwidth. He had some pithy statement -- I probably am getting this wrong -- but it was something like: It is better to estimate the bandwidth than to run a bandwidth test to know the bandwidth -- because when you run a bandwidth test you know your available bandwidth is always 0. Somehow my paraphrase seems way more verbose and has less impact.... Perhaps others will chime in with their results with Teams with VPN and without VPN. It seemed good either way for me.

@bronccat You definitely want to run this test hard wired. WiFi problems are complex and crazy hard to fix so you want to be sure your connection using the wired cable gives a good result before moving on to finding issues with the WiFi. You want to to get a group of results up there according to those step that maratsade gave, and then the advanced group that gives support through this site are much better at assisting folks than the lower level phone/chat group. For my first 6 months with HughesNet, I had fantastic WiFi -- then the leaves started to come off the trees and the neighbors WiFis were stomping all over mine. Being sure you do not have a problem with your dish or modem or something that must come first or you will go crazy. Once you have some good tests up there, you can let them know by posting your link to the testmy.net results. Although I assume your results are the ones for bronccat.

I do not intend to mislead anyone and I hoped the usage of words like 'appears' would express that. Some routers can show you detailed data usage per device. So with router logs for every day's activities saved, I can see how much data a device pulled and when it pulled it, how fast it pulled it and the general latency in ms associated with the activity. If I may be so bold as to offer some speculation, it appears that VDS does limit the amount of data that a single device can pull from obvious recreational video sites, and that there is an increase in latency associated with the operation for some reason which may just be coincidence, but when I see that line go up when a device is pulling data and that the line for data amount looks suspiciously like it is leveled off and fairly constant, I just sort of assume "whew -- good thing that VDS is on!" If I turn off the VDS, the device appears to pull data faster, and the latency numbers drop back down. The device also appears to consume more of my data as many streaming sites seem to jump to a higher resolution, but my eyes are pretty bad. Leaving the VDS off when the crew comes through, even for a brief time, and I usually see several GB disappear to some silly android phone. Of course I do not mean to imply I am sure of this. It appears the VDS does what the name implies, as I think GabeU had some Fast.com results that showed results comparing data rates with the VDS on/off, but maybe he can clarify. Just by glancing at a graph I feel like I have a pretty good idea if my niece or her family is downloading a video from some site (maybe Netflix?), or streaming from someplace, and I just kind-of/sort-of guess at if the VDS is on or not without actually looking. I do not mean to imply that this is anything other than speculation. Regarding the interpretation of the policy they posted, sure I could be very mistaken -- probably wrong. I just can't imagine why they would ask users to identify the sites they need improved if they did not want to do something to improve them. But then I am not very imaginative.

The first thing is to locate that cable to directly connect to the modem. If you turn off the WiFi without having the cable, you may have some trouble 🙂 After you have the cable hookup, you can proceed to following steps in that link maratsade sent. That 36Mbps is a number from the log giving an idea of how much bandwidth it is seeing. In general, it dips down at busy times of the day or there are communication issues. Given that clear codes we saw earlier it seems things are working good. And if you are on beam 82, then I would have expected such a high number at 6pm even though it is approaching "prime time" for satellite usage because I am on beam 82, and it has been very smooth and fast for the last couple of days. With the test results, it should shed some light on the next step.

Ideally, it would be best to have various users on different beams to try out Teams with VPN and Teams without VPN. I am pretty sure I have been using Teams and Webex both ways, and it seems good both ways but trying under conditions of some congestion would be good to see if this is a factor. I have been pretty busy today, and with ping times flat lined near minimum for satellite until after 9am and staying insanely low until after 3:30pm, I don't think I have had a fair chance of seeing any congestion yet for a fair test. It operated great today, but today was unusually fast judging by the numbers I am looking at. MarkJFine does have a good point. I have noticed that uploading to an FTP with the VPN can be painful, and fast if I kill the VPN. The reasons he mentioned are spot on. Anyway, the "throttling" of video is through the VDS, and I am pretty confident of the following speculation regarding the HughesNet optimization strategies*: Turning off the VDS (when it stays off 😉 eliminates all evidence of throttling VDS does not appear to throttle productivity sites -- at least the ones I see. That request they put out asking for user input about work/education related sites they are having trouble with would imply they are intending to give these sites extra priority -- throttling them would be very counter productive to the entire purpose of the effort. After all, they are not putting all this is place to roll out a bunch of new plans with crazy limits and glowing names, right? *edit

The HughesNet folks that do the troubleshooting want some bandwidth tests run in a very particular way so that they can line up the results with the data they can get a hold of. If there are not obvious issues showing in the State Code, and Diagnostic Code, then they pretty much wait to get tests that have been run like they are looking for. That link maratsade provided gives the details of how to run the tests the way they want them done, but the main points are: To run the TestMy.net test using a wired connection To be sure other data vampires are not hoping on the WiFi during the test, they will want that off To be sure to use a Test Size of 25MB for the download test I think I see your testmy account as there is one using your screen name, so once you have a batch of tests done like that they can compare the results against the diagnostic log information and other data they have to draw some conclusions about what is happening. The information about when the VDS was switching back on is insightful -- I don't normally go in and deactivate the VDS every day. When the menagerie leave, I turn it off and noticed it was on again based on normal observation and figured it was related to the pandemic measures based on the posted notice. Although I don't use VPN everytime, I often do when I am on a Webex/Teams so this might be the key. @maratsade Could you try a VPN and see if your Teams works better? If this is true then this will be a very welcome solution. I often assume the VPN just slows things down as it does noticeably reduce overall bandwidth. Thanks!

Traffic and internet congestion play a very large role, optimisation or no. Generalising is not helpful when there are so many variables. Yes, certainly traffic and congestion plays a role. Before the changes, I would dread doing a meeting from 7pm to 9pm because it would be painful and I had a batch in January that were as expected. Now, Teams seems to work so good it is almost as if someone has some serious voodoo going on. I just hoped off one just a minute ago, and it was fast and smooth. Maybe they can do something to adjust what you are seeing? @Liz Any information about how long the permanent snooze lasts now, or has this now been reverted for the last two months? I say this because my VDS does not seems to have turned back on by itself, and is staying off like it did before. I don't watch a lot of videos and when I do, I prefer to adjust the data rate from the video site, so I normally only turn it on when the kids with the menagerie of devices come.

Where are you getting this information? Although I could "turn off" the VDS from the screen, it was obvious from basic testing (or just watching the task manager) that it was still on at some level even in less busy times. This may have been a measure dependent on beam, but when this went back to the way it was before a couple of months ago (with it actually being off) the difference was easy to see. I vaguely remember someone else noticing this too, but I don't know what thread it was--perhaps they can chime in. Anyway, as video streaming is the big bandwidth pig, it is the common and obvious target ISPs go after to optimise work/productive things. Many other ISPs use plans with a very tight data saver policy that can not be turned off -- with the pandemic measures, where is an ISP going to get extra bandwidth? Based on what I could see from keeping data usage logs from every day, I maintain that it came by trimming back on what was available to the recreation video sites to make way for zoom/webex/teams/etc. When you turned your VDS off during this time period, were you able to download a video at a higher rate or watch HD without buffering? Do you have any information regarding where the extra bandwidth came from? The following phrase strongly implies giving priority to critical sites, which means reducing priority to non-critical sites: "To help people working from home, we have optimized Cloud-based business applications. We have also optimized online educational apps, and are working with teachers to identify the websites and learning tools on which they depend." They even asked for users to report sites they were having trouble with. As for me, I could see WebEx and Teams seemed to be operating in spectacular fashion while at the same time YouTube was pinched. *edit

The phrase "we are increasing the amount of available capacity" means they put the thumb-screws down on the video data saver in the following ways: You could not turn the video data saver off (permanently)* The bandwidth per video stream/download to known recreational video sites was roughly cut in half Before these measures, a video stream with the VDS turned on would be capped around 5.5Mbps in non-congested times, and about half that during prime time (perhaps depending on the beam). The 5.5Mbps was a download peak, with a per stream peak for streaming being much lower. So in the early morning hours you could watch 480p/720p if the large portions of the screen were not changing quickly or download roughly 2GB of video per hour. And you could turn VDS off and watch in HD (again during off-peak time). After these measures, you were stuck with the VDS on and it was capped around half the normal rate for downloads so even during off-peak time with a comparably reduced peak for streaming you were not too likely to see 480p except with talking heads or a lot of buffering. Again I suspect the exact level may have been dependent on which beam you are on. They have since backed down these emergency measures (something they did a couple of months ago?), and you can turn VDS off again. It is important to realize where this "extra capacity" came from, or some folks in control may come to believe nobody knows the difference and they will make these measures permanent to sell to more users and/or create wild pie-in-the-sky plans with crazy names like "Freedom" etc -- the result will turn a good service into a living nightmare. *edit

Sure it could be something else, but it appears to be a 13.2m dish which is what was listed in the license application for the OMA gateway. I was searching for this one because I thought such a big dish would be easy to find compared to the ones with smaller dish antenna. Of course, it occurs to me that maybe all gateways now have this size dish, just they may not be able to be located at the normal site because of restrictions like being too close to airports. The footnote in the application made it seem as if pilots might crash into them on takeoff or something based on comment about FAA notification which made me snicker a bit -- I am not sure why the wording of the footnote made me think that. *images from Wikipedia and HughesNet advertisement page.

Maybe this is the OMA gateway? I could not find anything like many of the gateways, but here is a 13.2m (13.1m ?) dish in the middle of a parking lot 15 miles from what looked like the gateway beam center -- anybody know if this is it? It is crazy far from where I started searching.... I did not see any other big dish antenna like this around Omaha over 4m, so this is as good as I can find without going crazy. Anybody know if this is it? Is that power lines running next to it?
