Issues with the new community site

Here are some issues with the new community site:

Very frequent Error 401 -- sometimes it's impossible to log on at all.  Clearing cache, history, and cookies, flushing the DNS,  using different browsers, using incognito browsing, and other strategies don't fix the issue.

Where did our images go? It used to be that graphics we had used were stored in our account and could be reused.

Too many uploaded images error message --  GabeU reported this one.

The missing ribbon at the top -- hopefully this will return in a couple of months.

The cookies popup --  this is very annoying as it pops up on every page, every time.

System logs out too quickly.  Annoying having to login again and again. Could this be extended?

It would be nice if the section cards on the main community site showed whether there are new messages in that section.  Before we could see that, and hovering over that information showed a time stamp.

Edited to say I can edit now! 🥳

  • Hey y'all! Thank you for making a mega thread, I feel a bit silly for not starting it on Day 1. We are looking into everything raised here. I believe some might be simple permissions changes that I can do. Others we will need to look a bit deeper. Thank you again.

Can you elaborate on "preview posts or PMs"? And try uploading images now. Still trying to locate user galleries.

Before the update, you were able to click a "Preview" button which showed how the post would look once posted.  I think the button was located at the top of the message.   You could toggle between Preview and Edit.  That hasn't been available since the update.  I found the preview option very helpful.

I just realised that the HTML button is gone too, so I wouldn't be able to edit the HTML. That was very helpful sometimes.

GabeUis the one with image issues.

  • Hi maratsade,

In addition to getting more info on what you mean by "preview posts or PMs", can you let me know about the 401 error issue you are encountering? I've only had this problem using VPN, but other connections work, so I am wondering how you are able to work around it in order to post at all?

    Thanks,

    Amanda

I think I've had the problem with and without a VPN.

I have to use a VPN for work -- it's mandatory. I didn't use to have any problem connecting before, though; that just cropped up since the update.

Does this means that HN is now blocking VPNs?  I had been told that HN didn't block VPNs.

As for getting around it, I just keep trying to log in, and sometimes it works.  Rarely. When the system logs me out, I have to start over, and often I just give up.  I hope that this issue can be fixed, because I'm obligated to use a VPN.

Nope, this shouldn't purposely be a problem with VPN unless it is saying you are in another country, which I don't think is the case. Our corporate one is pretty finicky, but it may not be related to VPN at all, but rather some bad cookie being stored that isn't redirecting from login correctly. The right folks on working on it.

    Amanda,

Another slightly irritating issue with the new community design is that it’s difficult to see whether there are new responses to posts without clicking on the post’s title. We only see a time stamp, but  whether that time stamp refers to the OP or to the latest response is not clear unless we go into the post every time. In the previous community iteration, it was much easier (and convenient) to ascertain in there were new responses to posts.  Is it possible to go back to that?
