Free hotspots from terrestrial ISP
I thought this might be useful to some: Xfinity (Comcast), a terrestrial internet service provider, has opened up free hotspots all over the country, and they are available to everyone, including...
I haven't used them yet, so I don't know. I would treat them as such, would keep my antivirus updated, etc.

I usually check my parent's email in the morning. They have Xfinity.
Surprise! Can't get to it today. Route is end-to-end Level3, which dies somewhere in Philadelphia.
No one can tell me this isn't a nationwide CenturyLink issue.
Xfinity is having its own issues -- the intertubes are sticky for them too. Hopefully someone, somewhere, will muck out CL.
