Hello Tom Hughey,
Thanks for posting. Below are some questions that will help us troubleshoot this issue. I have also sent you a message to further address your issue.
1. What type of phone are you using (Corded / Cordless)?
2. Please power Cycle your Devices and if possible try a new phone/handset and see if the issue persists.
3. Can you please describe the noise that you are hearing? Is it static noise?

1. The type of phone I am using is a cordless Panasonic.
2. I cycled the modem and the Cisco ATA. And, then called my friend and had a great, trouble free conversation for about a half hour. it was just as good as it was before I got GEN5. Evidently, cycling the modem and Cisco ATA solved the problem. Let's hope it stays solved.
