Yes, it is the ground terminal that talks to the satellite and connects the signal to the internet. I'm in Arkansas but like you, my gateway terminal is in Nebraska. It is a site with satellite dishes, lots of equipment including servers and cables connected to the internet. From what I understand they are also manned 24/7.

Just for info I'm on same gateway but Echostar 17 satellite, Gen4 plan and of course different beam. Haven't had similar problem as far as I know. Might help to snip this page everyday at the same time for a week and post them: http://192.168.0.1/limited.html#!/diagnostics/hourly-history

Yep, do 150 GB plans so people can complain even more about slow speeds. Amazes me how folks don't relate plans to capacity, speed and individual experience. I must be really ignorant. All of it is intertwined in my mind. Cord cutters who expect HD video streaming and gaming 24/7 also make things worse. Some even expect ultra HD. Smack my head and hit it with a hammer!

Most likely one of the most Internet congested days of the year. Have no doubt HughesNet is not the only ISP having extreme slowdown today. Truthfully, satellite only compounds the problem. But servers and nodes everywhere are most likely maxed out.

LOL on the title. I don't get it either, couldn't be more plain this section has nothing to do with technical complaints, help or even whining about the service. Oh well, I asked for this General section way back when, and people post technical issues here also. A case of careful what you wish for. I do wonder about our education system sometimes. Do think they need to add "the place to ask for help" to the Tech Support section description. Happy Festivus everyone! Oh, and Merry Christmas to!

Wife and I are still pretty simple even with modern luxuries. We stay at home with no close neighbors on 20 acres surrounded by national forest on three sides. Go into town maybe twice a week for groceries. We're pretty much loners when it comes down to it. Our 3 dogs are our family, we love them like children actually. May sound pathetic but we are happy, especially now that we no longer live off-grid and have real plumbing and electricity. The Amish can have the no indoor plumbing and no electricity. May be a simple life but there is a reason most don't embrace it. It is 200 years ago. Could also go back to the ancient Roman way of living. They were actually pretty advanced for the time. (Plumbing) I respect them living the way they want, just not the way I, or my wife, want to live in modern days. Feel lucky we were born in modern times with modern conveniences.

Some discussion about Amish living here in other threads. Trust me, no fun if you ask me. Yes, nostalgia is great but the real thing is different. We lived off-grid for 12+ years and truth is, it sucked! Compost toilets are the pits. I respect them totally but no way I'd want to live my entire life that way. There is a reason we went to electricity and indoor plumbing. Nice to have 21st century things like a toilet that flushes, running water and electricity.

Personally no way I'd get involved with it. I like to change the "B" to an "Sh" in Bitcoin. It seems to be a Millennial and younger thing. I have zero faith in it. Honestly have no idea what is even driving it. Again seems like smoke and mirrors monopoly money to me.

Isn't it like Monopoly money? Basically only worth what someone is willing to value it at. So, I want to sell an iPad at 1000 bitcoins and some idiot is willing to pay that amount then a sale is made. Doesn't really mean the bitcoin has true value outside the virtual world. I'm so confused what the heck is happening in the world. An unreal currency, with nothing backing it up like gold, can purchase things just because people on the Internet assign value to it? Please help me understand this. All comments welcome. Older I get the more I'm amazed what is going on in the world.

I'm fine with 10 mbps speed, anything above that is gravy to me. Maybe because I have never had cable internet. Went from dial-up to satellite, thought I was in heaven. Admit downloading a file at 20-30 mbps is nice but not that big of a deal. I do get a lot of 20-30 mbps speed, especially early morning. As far as page loading, I've been on high latency satellite for so long I'm used to it and don't expect anything else. I do notice much quicker page loads the few times I use my cell hot spot but truthfully not that big of a deal to me. So old I remember text painting a line at a time on a monochrome green screen over dialup. Took several seconds for a single line. This here satellite stuff is dang sure awsome if'in ya ask me!

HughesNet is part of EchoStar after all, and they impact the bottom line in the end.

Gabe, problem is posters here complain about 1-1.5 speed and say they can't stream anything. Maybe true for them but I can. I dunno what the problem is honestly. Even during very low speed times I can stream at low def Netflix. My guess is they are trying to stream in HD or even UHD. Maybe Netflix uses some magic sauce with their video compression but if so it sure works. Or, let's start a conspiracy and say HughesNet is giving low defintion Netflix streamers priority. Oh no I didn't.............lol. Maybe a gateway thing, who knows. We're all out here just guessing in the end.

I just don't understand streaming HD on capped data. Especially the low satellite data caps. Have been accused of being too logical by the other half. Honestly fine with lower definition. Maybe my TV interpolates better than others but it looks fine at lower def without HD. I'm talking a 55" TV. Then again it seems us older folks have lower standards when it comes to video quality. Things change but satellite is still not at total cord cutter level.

Agree, we honestly don't stream that much Netflix, especially during prime time, maybe a couple times a week. Then it is in low def as I said before. I think a lot are trying to do HD at night, then they complain here or the call center when buffering. Satellite and gateways trying to parcel out the bandwidth. Definitely agree the younger cord cutters, we have OTA TV, trying to keep the better half from making us getting satellite TV....lol. PS: My math problem was worse case. Really don't think 44,000 trying to stream HD during prime time is that outrageous. Many grew up thinking they flick a switch and it happens. God forbid they do streaming in SD.

OK, did some simple math here, please correct me if I made any errors. 1. Echostar 19 has been advertised as having "up to" 220 Gbps throughput: http://spacenews.com/atlas-5-launches-echostar-19/ 2. Netflix says 5 Mbps is needed for HD streaming: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306 3. So, divide 220 Gbps by 5 Mbps and you get the max user capacity at that speed which equals 44,000 customers. 4. In my feeble mind that says if 44,000 customers are trying to stream video at HD, at the same time of night, the satellite throughput is already maxed out. I realise there is compression and other things being used but still, 44,000 or even 50,000 doesn't seem like that many users to send things over the edge when talking a half million users at least on each of the Echostar 17 & 19 satellites. Please tell me if my math or logic is off. Point I'm trying to make is people who think they are an island streaming at the higher definitions are affecting the entire ocean.

I wouldn't want to lose my low def Netflix capability but is sad there are lots of idiots that should not be allowed to do certain things. Good grief, they don't realize the simple fact that even if they're getting 20-25 mbps speed it is data suicide to stream video at anything above 720p which also eats data quickly. I don't even do 360p much except shorter clips.

And if you read through their forum many are suffering with slow speed. Offering 150 GB at "guaranteed" high speed is something that will never happen. Even cable doesn't guarantee speed.
