This generally would mean that the internet provider at the ground station was having routing issues, which would definitely cause 'freezing'. You could test this yourself by doing a traceroute to a common YouTube url. Provided they can access your account, one of the reps here could determine which ground station that is and alert the provider of the problem.   I also feel obliged to let you know that attempting to 'self-tech' your own dish alignment isn't recommended unless you have the appropriate sighting and signalling tools. Likely a combination of things: 1. It's football season - people stream games. Congestion always increases every fall, especially on Thus evening, and all day Sat/Sun. 2. The weather has been crummy - more people indoors trying to use internet. 3. Hurricanes and general rainy weather (not to mention falling leaves) contributing to poor links between dish and satellite, as well as satellites to ground stations. When links are poor, it causes an increase in repeated packet sends, which inherently increases congestion. Those games will work in story mode, but may have problems connecting for PVP or PVE where they have to interact remotely with other players. I don't know about PS5, but I do know this is true for XBox Live. Even if they could connect properly, the satellite lag time is sufficient enough that your son's online avatar would appear motionless to others and likely would be `killed` before he even had a chance to react, which kind of defeats the purpose. Unfortunately, this is a basic fact of unenhanced satellite internet because of the distances and the physics of radio transmission ensures a minimum of 0.5 sec ping times.   However, if you are somewhat close to a cellular tower I would highly recommend switching to a Fusion plan. Fusion augments satellite with cellular/wireless technology and alleviates the laggy parts. Probably of little solace to anyone on this thread, but a little over a year ago I never got a property tax bill in the mail. There have been times when there was junk I never received, or things of very little consequence, but this was something as important as a county tax bill that wasn't just delivered late - it never showed.   The current state of the mail system is a complete shambles and it's been getting worse ever since DeJoy's cutbacks. It mostly stems from problems in the sorting procedures and very little carrier error. I'm constantly getting mail for people the next road over (similar number, but not the same road name). In some dire instances I've received mail meant for the next town over. It's a complete wonder where the mail meant for me is ending up. I doubt those receiving it are likely to do as I do: Simply put it back in the box and raise the red flag for the next pickup, especially if they've thought it was for them and already opened it up, trashing the envelope in the process.   As such, I no longer rely on the mail to receive paper bills nor send any payments. The errors are great enough that it's become too risky. I either pay by credit card on a secure web site or electronically through a bank app where it can be tracked and verified. As is the case here, If I notice a significant change in the billing amount, I check the invoice online.   Just throwing my 2 cents out there. Looks like either the cable to the dish is either bad or not connected to either end properly; or the dish's radio went bad. I'd first check to see if the cable to the back of the modem is firmly connected and secure. Check at the dish as well if that's physically possible. ... View more

The double-NAT is part of how satellite internet routing works at both the satellite and the ground stations. Nothing can be done about that, but it will mean that you will not be able to use some camera services that require a reachable user-IP instead of a server-in-the-middle. It's quite possible that it was not firmly plugged in at either the wall, the cord on the power brick, or (especially) in the back of the modem. Those barrel-shaped DIN plugs like what's in the back of the modem are usually pretty hard to fully seat into the socket - I would check that first. ... View more

HughesNet is stable enough to handle Amazon Prime, as I've watched it myself.   What you're probably experiencing is a corrupted cached DNS entry, not an issue with lag time. Amazon likely uses a different path to it's streaming content than it's menuing application and the images it uses, and that path has been somehow corrupted. I've experienced this myself at times.   To correct this, you may want to: 1. Unpower your modem by removing the cord from the power brick - this will automatically kill any cached DNS entries. 2. While the modem is off, similarly remove the power input to your Roku - this will kill any cached entries in the Roku. 3. You may want to optionally unpower or restart anything else connected to the wifi to ensure those devices aren't similarly harboring any cached DNS entries that are corrupt. 4. Re-apply power to the modem and wait a few minutes until the wifi reappears. 5. When the modem is fully operational, restart your Roku (and any other devices). ... View more

The only way 'admin' (without the single-quotes and all lower case) isn't the appropriate password is if someone changed it and never wrote it down, nor told you it was changed from the default. I think what Damian is trying to say is that the modems are now running 802.11ax by default. In theory, devices designed to see older protocols (e.g., 802.11g) should recognize it, however some aren't even recognizing there's even an available wifi channel. Try logging into your wifi settings: (http://192.168.42.1/wireless_main.htm?t=1707568432118) and changing the protocol for the wifi band that you're trying to use from 11ax to either 11g, 11n, or 11ac (whatever you were using before) and see if it now works. ... To me that would seem to indicate an odd browser problem. The link is the link. The browser interprets what to do with it on a left or right click. Does this seem to happen only on one brand of browser (e.g., Chrome)? Edit: Wait a minute... now I think I understand. The links are created dynamically in Javascript with the originating page followed by a hash. So left-clicking on "Terms and Conditions" goes to "T&Cs", but right clicking gets munged. Jumping into the fray...   There are a couple of factors that haven't been raised: 1. The chart you're describing is using average numbers to give most people an idea. I, for one, agree that the numbers stated appear to make it look as if streaming has less of an impact than it does. 2. Video Optimization doesn't appear to work perfectly on all services, so you'll see some variance due to that. 3. All streaming services do things differently. Some have a way to set the speed to a lower SD level (which also varies), and some test the connection to see what 'their' optimum resolution would be best. Netflix and Disney+ fall into the first category, but know that Disney+ can use a lot more data per hour than Netflix - up to twice as much. Max and Paramount+ use the latter category and they will always use much more data. As an aside, you can see the test happen in real time - that's the little buffer pause after it starts in HD. followed by a few second rewind that continues in SD. 4. One other factor that causes an increase in data usage: handshaking. Data usage includes upload as well as download. So if the handshaking back to the streaming server happens more often you'll see an uptick in data usage. Edit: Just to put some qualitative data on this: About 3 hours of streaming (1 hr ep each of Halo and Star Trek Discovery on Paramount+, 1 hr ep of The Witcher on Netflix) plus other things like 2 adults checking social media (incl. small vids), email, etc. will use upwards of 4GB a day. Some apps like Amazon (just the shopping, not Amazon Prime) seem to use a lot of data now, just because of the embedded hi-res images and video ads. It all adds up. ... View more

Just want to add: If you plan on using just satellite internet for real-time gaming it's going to be a real problem. There is a 500ms minimum latency involved and your player would be dead on the ground before you even knew it happened.   That said, if you have a fairly good mobile telephone signal, you can inquire about getting a HughesNet Fusion plan. Fusion augments the standard satellite comms with LTE wireless and uses that for things like real-time gaming amongst other things. I've used it for PvP type things and it works great. Despite thinking it was clever to bring it up likely hurt your cause though. @RobertOder    Since we're swapping bona fides I have 34 years of experience in communications (US Army and Northrop Grumman) and decades of experience with HughesNet. If you don't think kids being home from school and being indoors doesn't have a major impact nor a load on the system, just look at the timeframe you've outlined - Winter break.   Also, have you ever considered that the sysops/tech people not jumping in as fast as you'd like is because email issues have been placed on the bottom of the urgency barrel? They're not abandoning you, just the email, because there are likely more pressing problems they need to deal with (J3 rollout, capacity, security, and increased load due to cable cutters to name a few) and (as I've said) your email issue likely can't be solved with the limited amount of resources.   If email is the reason why you're sticking with this service then I think your priorities are misplaced, since there are several better options for email (as I've said) that cost you nothing. And, oh by the way, email may have been included but you're paying through the nose for an internet service that has a tremendous amount of overhead and sunk equipment costs, not subcontracted email services that may likely be going away.   I'm sorry that your expectations don't match the reality of the situation, but that's life. ... Guys,   Hate to parachute in but I'm pretty sure that the issue is system-wide network congestion, which is affecting latency, which in turn is affecting the connection to the email's authentication server. It happens periodically, but typically gets worse in colder weather (more people inside using internet, duh). There's no conspiracy theory here, just an unfortunate downside of how satellite comms works.   If this is still a problem for you, I sincerely recommend you proactively start moving to a free, third party-based email service such as Gmail. Just want to point out that an uptick in spam to your email address has a lot more to do with the amount of active spam bots and hijacked email servers (which always sees an uptick this time of year) than it does with your email use. If your address is already on a list that is propagating to the spam bots then it's already out there. Right now, about 95% of it is coming from China.   Also want to point out that these guys are now changing their tactics faster than Spam Assassin (what most email servers use to detect and block spam) can update their spam-detection algorithms. The only fully effective way to block it all is to literally block everything that's not on a whitelist of desired senders, and let everything else go to Junk.
